So we could go to war with Luxembourg if we leave the EU?

Doesn't the cold war count? Was only 25 years or so ago that the threat of a mushroom cloud on the horizon wasn't beyond the realm of possibility.

What has being part of the EU got to do with that? If we leave we're not going to be invaded by France or bombed by Germany.

The eu is a direct result of the European coal and steel confederation which was designed specifically to tie industrieson Europe together to prevent a further western European conflict

That still doesn't mean that if we leave we're gonna be at war any time soon.

Plenty of reasons to stay in the eu, this one is just potty.

it is a valid point for staying in though

countries behave better to each other, without it you'd maybe have countries like Russia invading their neighbours and .....................oh hang on a minute

So by your reckoning if we left the EU and for arguments sake, the French invaded us then you think the rest of Europe would say '****** to the feckers, they are not part of the steel and coal federation which is far more important than world stability so we'll do nothing'. Utterly barmy.

I think, to be fair to the original poster he does have a good point.

Whenever countries are talking to each other about issues, including immigration, trade, etc they are less likely to resort to other means.
Also right wingers in different EU countries form a group & left wingers do & they have a cohesion that goes beyond national boundaries.

You only have to look at the USA. There has never been warfare between states, so some sort of loose federalism has to be good for peace in my opinion.

If you study modern European history then you see that filling WW2 the European steel and coal confederation was deviced to tie the key industrit's of Europe together meaning for example the Germans could not cooperate without the french and visa versa

The European union in its current form is a direct descendent of that treaty that created the European steel and coal confederation

Apart from the American Civil War?

That aside, I agree with you and tyrone on this one. I don't think if we left then France or Germany would declare war on us, but I think it's pretty clear that closer political working in Europe has avoided any possibility of major inter-state conflict (in the western half at least) over the past 70-odd years. And for a continent with a history like ours, that's not bad going.
