Just been up to an Open evening at Huddersfield New College with the youngest and seen that one of the Sports Teachers is Paul Futcher. Now to me Futch was one of the best CB's I've seen at Barnsley, just so in control of most situations, but what I remember him for is the own goal chip I think against Millwall at Oakwell over Clive Baker, and him shooting from range against Everton and hitting the bar. Definitely a legend to me but the youngest goes 'Oh yeah he took us when we came for our intro day'. I dispair!
Hope you educated Jess all about Futcher then Richard ? Remember his debut after he signed along with Calvin Plummer. Beat Derby 5-1 if memory serves me right.
The own goal you mentioned was against West Brom and as we were a few goals up at the time we could at least laugh about it!
Remember it well, Andy old mate. Futcher had a poor game that day, whilst Plummer, who scored, looked the Anthophila's patellas. However it soon became apparent that Futcher was a class act.
Yep, I remember it well. Plummer scored one of them too. Futcher was the most cultured, classy centre half I've seen in 40 years watching the Reds. Think it was Machin who ditched him for being too old at about 33. He then played another 4 or 5 years at Grimsby at roughly the same level. Rolls Royce of a defender. Wish we had him now.....
Am I right in thinking that he never scored a goal for us in almost 6 seasons? Fantastic player. He was given a free transfer in view of his age, but went on to play 5 or 6 years for Grimsby in the same division. Coolest player under pressure I've ever seen for us.
Sort of right. He never scored for us whilst playing for us, but he did get us a goal when he was playing for Oldham against us, by scoring an own goal!
That's true. About eighteen months before he signed for us, Futch scored our goal in a 1-1 draw whilst playing for Oldham.
Oh yes Andy, Don't think I shut up about him on the way home. Will have to make her read the History of Barnsley while were on holiday Do they still have parent evenings at college ;-)
You learn something new every day So his sum total of scoring involving Barnsley is one for and one against, both own goals.
Re: You learn something new every day He also scored an own goal in the 3-1 home defeat to Carlisle United, August Bank Holiday Monday 1984.
Absolute class act, loved him, I'm sure ponte used to hiss the words "icccce" whenever he touched it, or maybe I dreamt that one!
This thread has inspired me. I'm going to dust off my Futch t-shirt that I got made up for the FA Cup semi-final and wear it tomorrow. Let's see if it inspires us to 3 points, or whether it inspires Cranie to lob Turnbull from 25 yards!
