Just found this and thought you might be interested to see how the locals tried to fight to keep the pit open. I'm afraid I can't put a date to it..... and I used to live in Darfield. Wonder what those blokes are doing now. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-tM52f8DRs
Interesting watch that - thanks for posting. The pit closed in 1989 so I'm tipping that this was probably filmed in 1988.
Absolutely riveting ,great find. Can remember it as yesterday some very familiar faces on there and some o!d acquaintances especially my now deceased old mate johnny bradder god bless him. That spirit has all but vanished now in our communities and is a great shame.
New film out at the moment called 'Still the Enemy Within'. On at Civic on Sat night and Hyde Park Picture House in Leeds on Sunday. Might be worth a watch...
It was interesting. My Dad worked at Darfield Main for over 40 years. My brother and brother in law also worked there. The meeting was held at Mitchell's & Darfield Miners Welfare which closed a couple of moths ago. I only recognised one person, Graham Reeves. I was at primary school with him and socialised with him before I moved away. Ite seems a lifetime away now. Mining has been all but obliterated from the South Yorkshire landscape and it will not be long before it is part of history across the country.
I'm glad I posted the link for this important piece of history. When I first found it about a week ago it had only about 160 views, now it has 950. This is when the interweb really comes into its own...... I think it's brilliant.
No he was no relation as far as I know. My Dad used to mention Chokka who I remember as a big Union man.
