detest it........legalised begging ....never had it when I were a kid....bloody yanks....bah fekking humbug. hth
Yanks? Kids dressing up and going to houses asking for money or sweets on halloween is a british tradition that only got taken to america in tbe 40s
My parents always say they never heard of it - Wakefield and Barnsley. For the first 7 years of my life we'd never heard of it either. Then we moved house and discovered it. 1979.
NOOOOO Certainly wasn't a tradition in Barnsley when I were a lad. We had mischievous neet and bonfire neet. Halloween came on the scene around 1980.
I'd never heard of it until we moved in fact I don't think it was something I'd even thought about until I watched ET circa '81 / '82.
Penny for the guy mister? Dressing my diminutive mate Rob up in his dad's old clothes and sticking him in a wheelbarrow outside Shafton WMC. Easy money. Ok, he got kicked a few times...
Theres only british kids that ask for money. All the kids here are quite happy with there stash of sugary treats. No need to knock on doors here either, everyone puts candy out on there door step or porch, if you dont want to be disturbed you turn your outside light off and no one gives your door a rattle. All the parents walk round with a beer or glass/bottles of wine and a fantastic time is had by all.
Not keen either, but it has to be better than "Penny for the guy" harassment on street corners. Ooh did you stuff that jumper all by yourself, 14 year old boy? Doesn't help me that Hallowee'en is also our Wedding Anniversary, and so for the last 10/11 years, we've spent it trudging around the streets with the kids. No, we didn't think of that when we got married....
Me and redarmy990 did that aswell with an old friend round Mapp Staincross etc. he had growth problems so looking back it was slightly inappropriate but it earned us money to buy Newky brown to sup int park! Happy days
I agree reev. Parents for one night of the year have no issue with their young children out in the dark begging on the doors of strangers. Usually in crap outfits of a bit of face paint or a cheap mask or wearing a binliner etc.
