    Its quite incredible that they managed it hope it doesnt fall off before they get good data as I see the harpoons didnt work so its clinging on by the mechanical equivalent of its finger nails at the moment at least thats my reading of it screwing itself in

    When they've done with it they will probably leave it there where somebody could trip up over it and brek their fecking neck. Fly tippers pfft.

    N they are bragging to be the first to go there.. A got my telly from comet years ago. :)

    I was there and back in an hour, dint tek ten years.

    A comet is untouched from the earth environment and magnetic field. It is the material that was around from the birth of the universe and our solar system.

    If they manage to get soil samples they could find the building blocks for life which could go a long way to suggesting how we came about to be on planet earth - and the way i believe we came to be here. One in the eye for the god squad but also would answer some pretty big questions.

    Who knows but do you think we should pack in exploration, adventure and human curiosity to understand the world and universe around us. Not to mention the jobs etc that were created to create such a mission.

    Once we stop searching and advancing we may as well pack up and be done and make way for the next species. :)

    Above all its exciting to see what they find. Its also mightily impressive what they have achieved to even land on the surface blindfolded with just coordinates and gravity to fly the craft there.

    Nothing short of amazing... but whats the point hey! We have people on here that cant even navigate an online ticketing system. ;)

    We're not all the same.

    I honestly couldn't give a toss how the works came about, and no matter how far we explore no one will ever know for sure. While they are spending billions sniffing comets millions of miles away, there people from charities such as cancer research begging for donations round every Corner to help raise money to try and cure diseases here on earth.

    We apparently landed men on the moon, what did that achieve. we dont go there anymore because its pointless

    Sorry but im just not in the least bit exited about it. I'm sure that group of people playing their little game of landing the spaceship on the comet will be ecstatic

    Just to pick up on that point in relation to the rest of your post.

    NASA didn't invent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), but NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory developed digital image processing to enhance pictures of the moon. That contributed to MRIs and CT or CAT Scans which are used in alsorts of medical applications nowadays - especially cancer.

    Another is fuel pumps that they developed for the space shuttle were used as heart pumps in heart transplants.

    And copied from a website here are a few more:

    Digital imaging breast biopsy system, developed from Hubble Space Telescope technology
    Tiny transmitters to monitor the fetus inside the womb
    Laser angioplasty, using fiber-optic catheters
    Forceps with fiber optics that let doctors measure the pressure applied to a baby's head during delivery
    Cool suit to lower body temperature in treatment of various conditions
    Voice-controlled wheelchairs
    Light-emitting diodes (LED) for help in brain cancer surgery
    Foam used to insulate space shuttle external tanks for less expensive, better molds for artificial arms and legs
    Programmable pacemakers
    Tools for cataract surgery


    Now tell me that pioneering space science doesn't help us fight and cure disease here on earth.

    Who knows what they may discover on that little comet that will give us an important piece of info to do something else amazing.

    And one last thing... you probably have the same view of the happenings at the CERN particle collider. Well the advancements and things they invented to make that work possible led to the invention of the Internet on which you are having this discussion :)

    I'm with you all the way mate, I think what they've done here is just amazing. 10 years the probe has been travelling. In those ten years the comet has travelled millions of miles, but they met up at a point in three dimensional space. No one drove it and made any last minute adjustments, it was programmed. It's so far away it takes half an hour for a radio signal to get there. It's awe inspiring. Even if they find nowt, previous space missions have proven that the development of technology for these craft has been of huge benefit to all mankind and your list above only just begins to scratch the surface.

    They probably wouldn't no as the research wouldn't have been there to reach the point of invention.
