Remember the old actor John Mills talking on Parky years ago, saying he ate owt except bread and tatties, Which is basically what your saying. He lived to be 97
Sounds interesting. Have tried the atkins and duken diets which are both (low/no) carb diets and do work but bloody hell its hard work eating basically nothing in the way of carbs. This sounds a bit more interesting. So is this the Paleo diet that's been mentioned elsewhere in the thread? BTW If I start am I allowed my Percie Turner's growler at the match ?
Stahlrost put a link to the paleo diet thing, but there's loads on the web. Meat, fish, egss and vegetables is basically what you eat. No processed crap just fresh food. Tonight I'm going to the Grill Pit. I'll have chicken wings, then steak salad. Tommorow I've got some salmon and prawns that I'll make like a fish stew thing in a tomatoe sauce with peppers and courgettes. On Sunday I'll have a proper Sunday dinner, but with more meat and veg than usual because I won't have any potatoes. A couple of slices more meat instead of some potatoes, give me that every time.
I have done a fair bit of looking into the biochemistry of this. And yes it works, but it is definitely not a good idea long term. Metabolizing ketones can cause all sorts of health issues long term, but then so can be overweight. What is total ****** is the idea that this is at all paleo, natural or close to an ancestral diet. Analysis of the bones on ancient people and hunter gathers shows that they only ate meat, with the exception of the intuits and a few other extreme case that were not renowned for long life.
Hi, can you qualify that please, do you mean the hunter gatherers had a short life or the Inuits? Ta.
The trouble with answering that is that most figures quoted are average life expectancies. Since most people died as children until recently average life expectancies were all short. However, that’s not to say that a few people did not live until a ripe old age.
tim ferris's 4 hour body is slow carbs and protein http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/...e/ir?t=pionelitrece-21&l=as2&o=2&a=0091939526 i tried it for a while but found it a bit of a ballache and didnt get teh results a lot of other people got so now opt for exercise and not eating ****. But i did find i didnt get the afternoon crash after fewer carbs.
I lost a lot of weight before the wedding almost accidentally; I've never been big but I decided for Lent that as I'd never given anything up before I would give up bread and crisps as I ate tons of both. I did wonder before starting what on earth I would eat (I hardly like anything) but after not eating it for that long, I decided to cut it out until after the wedding (just over a year). It's worth noting here that I don't really drink, except maybe a vodka and diet lemonade once a fortnight or so, and I can't stand pasta or rice. I do eat a lot of potatoes though! Annoyingly though, now that I am eating bread again and occasionally trying rice, I've put more weight on than I originally lost. I could never put weight on no matter what I ate before but now I'm half a stone heavier than I've been all my life.
Not been on a diet to lose weight but always fancied combining healthy eating with a bit of indulgence ie a few pints etc. Then a few years ago dropped on these websites. Apart from tonight I have hardly felt I'll with colds or flus etc it just seems ironic imsuffering tonight lol.but in all honesty I had man flu every other week. http://www.juicemaster.com http://www.buynutribullet.co.uk Some very interesting reading and tips and if you really want to get into it everything's there. Can't do any harm its all natural stuff.
Is their name a complete misnomer then? If you're only eating meat then you're doing the hunting but you're not doing any gathering. I've got to say I'm struggling to believe that for a number of reasons. Our bodies are capable of digesting a number of different food stuffs, both plant and animal matter. We are omnivores. If I understand the science of that correctly this is down to the way we have evolved, Darwian's theory of natural selection. If we could only eat meat then if it wasn't available we'd die of starvation. However, if our bodies evolved to also process plant matter then our ancestors could eat fruit and berries and nuts and vegetables when there was no meat available and they would survive passing on their genes to the next generation. We can process those food stuffs and I'm struggling to understand why we can if we never did. Also, hunting is difficult. The success rates of a hunt for even the best natural killers is quite low. Carnivores are often hungry. Feeling hungry is unpleasant. If there is other food around that we can eat, that tastes nice (fruit is full of sugar and tastes delicious) then I don't understand why these hunter gatherers wouldn't eat it. Humans spread out all over the globe. In some areas meat was in an abundant supply, but in others it wasn't and I can't believe our resourceful species would go hungry instead of eating what was on offer. I'm also struggling to understand how we learnt what plants and berries and nuts we could eat, which were nice, and which we couldn't, which were unpleasant or poisonous. Knowledge is passed down from generation to generation. Someone must have started eating plant matter at some time and I'm pretty sure this happened before the 1960s. Also, I'm sure I once saw a documentary in which they excavated where a hunter gatherer tribe lived and it was covered in nut shells. Not sure if they were petrified or not.
thats you getting comfortable now you are married! only joking JD. Often the case when people fad diet that you put more back on because your body decides to store stuff up ready for the next fad. The only way to really lose weight and keep it off are permanent lifestyle changes and doing it progressively imho.
Ups there should have been the word 'rarely' in that sentence. - only rarely ate meat ie you are completely correct Jay. The Iceman found in the Alps was a good example. He died with a gut full of meat But analysis shows that his diet was most veggie. My point being a Paleo diet would have contained lots of carbs. I discuss this at length in chapter 1 of my next book that's out in April
A misunderstanding, that makes more sense. I believe, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, that my low carb diet, a paelo diet if you like, is actually badly named. It should be called a low processed carbohydrate diet. I eat more meat than prehistoric man, because I have access to a butcher and I don't have to go out and kill the animals myself, but I also eat lots and lots of vegetables. For tea yesterday I had a steak salad with a side order of roasted veg. I had about half an hundred weight of plant matter. There was that much it actually defeated me and I left a few lettuce leaves. The vegetables I eat contain quite a lot of carbohydrates in both starch and sugar form. I'm under the impression that these carbohydrates are enough to keep me healthy and give me a balanced diet. What I don't eat is wheat flour, which is about 75% carbohydrate, predominantly starch. This means I'm getting a lot fewer calories than I'd usually eat as a western diet tends to rely on bread and pasta to bulk out our diet and provide us with energy. To compensate for that I'm eating more fat. More eggs (pastured) some nuts, olive oil, coconut oil, avocado, oily fish and fatty meat. But I'm actually eating more vegetables than I was previously and I already ate loads. From the view of a scientist, have I got a healthy diet?
I am a botanist not an expert on diets. So I tend to look at this from the plants view of things. There are lots of plants that store carbohydrates to survive harsh seasons - typically winter. Obvious examples being potatoes, yams, cassava. Humans around the world harvested/ate such plants -because they are stuffed full of carbohydrate energy just when we needed it most and store well. The negative aspect would originally have come from the fact that these plants defended themselves from such attacks by being toxic. Potatoes are full of alkaloids, yams contain hormone analogues, cassava - cyanide etc. Actually we have utilised these plants for so long that we have selected, less toxic plant varieties, worked out ways to cook / process them to detoxify them and even evolved enzymes of our own to digest the carbohydrates. So generally I think the danger of carbs is probably over stated. Its probably far worse for me sitting on arse all day and reading the BBS. However, you may be right about over processed carbs. Its possible that we actually do need a bit of those plant toxins, because we have been eating them for so long, that now we actually need them to stay healthy. I think that might be chapter 4
