Has to be one of the Premier League signings such as Eric Tnkler or Jan Aage Fjortoft. I know Redders only wanted parity with them but they wouldn't give it him so he signed for Charlton.

Would imagine Ashley Ward was on a decent wage.

I'd imagine it's a more recent player than one we had in PL or just after given how football wages have gone since then.

    Moore? Shackell?

I would have said Ashley Ward by quite a big margin at a guess

Wouldn't he had only been on his original contract though? signed for £1.25 million and hardly a eye catching transfer at the time, can't remember him having his contract renewed on new terms.

IIRC Wardy left for Blackburn for £14k pw.

Which suggests he was on less here so I'd say he'd be nowhere near our top earner here.

I stand with my suggestions of Moore or Shackell.

It could have been one of our many panic loan signings (Harewood, McShane, Proschwicz, Greening) or someone on a short term deal (Frimpong, O'Connor) when you think it through.

Although Sheron was reportedly on £7k per week which will take some beating, particularly given the fact that he signed a four and a half year contract.

Chris O'Grady I would have thought. 10 grand a week wasn't it after the goals he scored in the relegation season triggered a clause in his contract. We were desperate to get rid and appeared able to sign half a dozen or so new faces after he'd gone, I presume for the same amount we paid O'Grady.

Agree, l think Ward's contract at the time would have not been our highest paid, he would have blitzed it with his new Blackburn contract mind. I'd say there were plenty of players earning more than Ward in the season's 98/99 - 00/01.

Barnard must have been on a decent wage after he extended his contract. Enough to turn down a move to the premier league.

That would explain why we were seemingly happy to let Charlton have him for £500k, when most felt he was worth a lot more than that.

Chris O'Grady's transfer made a sum equivalent to the entire debt of all South American countries available.

At the evening with John Dennis at the Lamproom he said the highest paid player during his time at Oakwell was Craig Hignett, who one year, including bonuses, etc, was paid £300k. Now if that's true it puts the players wages a lot lower than the amount that tends to get speculated.

Incidentally, I took delivery of a copy of the 1971 annual report and statement of accounts this morning and the total wage bill (including bonuses, management salaries, NI and pension) in 1970 was £51,802.47 and in 1971 was £59,062.22. I would imagine this means we messed up with decimalisation and either calculated the 1970 figures incorrectly or everybody got an unexpected pay rise in 1971!
