Was shocked at hearing this yesterday. Usually Dave Whelan knows what he's doing. Dunno if he's brave or stupid to employ someone who's racist, homophobic and sexist. I bet he didn't get a reference off Vincent Tan.
Cup final Dave is old school, he's from the era when you where told to take offensive comments with a pinch of snuff and get on with it .
I've just had a read now, he sent them using a company phone and the owners of Cardiff h managed to get hold of the records....oops!
I think if all our messages were looked at, many of us would be considered racist, homophobic and sexist. I make jokes all the time that some class as offensive, some of them towards my own disabilities. Some people take offence to far too much these days.
a private conveersation should just be that. Seems that Tan was just looking for summat to justify his daft decision to me.
Do you really believe that? What about private conversations between a paedophile ring? Or private conversations between jihadists? Should they remain private as well? I personally don't agree that all conversations should remain private. I also don't believe the massively offensive text messages sent by Malky Mackay, should remain private either. His appointment makes a complete mockery of the FAs respect and anti discrimination mandates. In my opinion..
Many managers would be in trouble with the FA if there private conversations were made public. Malky isn't the only one I guarantee
Its never a private conversation on a company phone, with company email, or in a company premises....
In terms of chat between friends that is offensive it's not something I would generally condone but we would have to be denying reality to say that this doesn't happen regularly and we would be sacking a lot of folks if we were to get rid of everyone who has passed an unguarded comment to a friend/work colleague. In this case the use of work communication methods does bring it into the work sphere. It just seems to me that this was exploited by Tan to hide an unpopular decision rather than dealing with the matter privately. Presumably as a first offence and in a prvate connversation you might be looking at a final written warning. The lack of black & Ethnic Minority managers and decision makers already cuts across the Respect and discrimination mandates in a far more serious way than the casual raciusm of an individuial again imo
And of course a precedent has been set when Richard Scudamore's sexist e-mails where blithely ignored by the powers that be. If Mackay gets punished, he should appeal.
