I can't say I know Dan, I haven't had reason to speak to him nor have I voted for him but he's ex Army so as far as MPs go at least he's got an understanding of the real world.

Not a clue, mate. I actually steer clear of local politics in Bradford. The diversity around here makes it harder to follow. Most folk I talk to seem to be pro Labour.

I often wonder how he managed to smarm his way into the seat in the first place. All I can think is that it was a case of political apathy and his profile that won him is victory. I'm not close enough to the political scene in Bradford to call it but I'd be surprised if he retains his seat.

He's popular with the Asian community.

I've not met many but the ex-army people I've met were pretty odd, to a man.

I like Gorgeous George Galloway. Wouldn't want him to be my MP but at least he's entertaining.

Odd in a good way? I served in the Army for several years and there are some oddballs amongst the ranks but they're still good men (most of them anyway).

Entertaining is one way of putting it. It's not the word I would have used but I can see where you're coming from.

If you want entertainment watch George Galloway senate hearings on youtube..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4LDQixpCa8

I have mixed feelings about GG, but he defends himself to a committee chaired by Norm Coleman, a particularly smarmy
Congressman/lawyer...Galloway destroys him and his case, prior to the hearings this senator obviously thought it would be an open and shut case, it soon becomes obvious he wishes he hadn't been involved.
If you have never seen this masterclass before, don't miss it, the first seven minutes are the allegations against him...and then Galloway speaks
it really is awesome stuff whatever your political opinion.

For quite a while this wasn't true. At one time in the noughties there were almost as many Barnsley Independent Group councillors as there were Labour. They had 24 councillors after the 2008 elections. However, their support collapsed and after the 2012 elections they were down to 5 councillors. I don't know why that is, but I do know they were, at one time in the recent past, extremely close to holding a majority in the council and a Labour councillor was anything but assured of being elected.

If a general contempt towards 'civvies' is good, then yes.

I have seen that attitude amongst some of my ex colleagues but I must say, in the interests of fairness, that it is also evident the other way around, especially in garrison towns.

I never really understood how you could be Independent and a Group at the same time

I'd imagine there are tensions. Never lived in one to be fair.

The council are short of money I know this because the letter box on my council house broke and they wanted to charge me £80 to repair it,but they can afford to build gypsy sites from which they will get nothing but trouble from and to hell with the local residents who pay their council tax,but then I assume no councillors live anywhere near the proposed site.

There have been Independants in Wombwell too, or Tories/Liberals masquerading as Independants, it seems that if you can befriend one of the local drinking celebrities and gerrall is mates on board with a few free sherbets then the seat is yours.

Most of the sites in Wombwell is where the schools were before they built the new ones.

Soon be no open space at all around Hemingfield & Wombwell.

All they see is the council tax coming into the coffers.
