    I am Dave Whelan's age.
I can't believe all the fuss being made. Not by Jews or Chinese people but others acting on their behalf. All this **** going on in the middle east -100's of thousands of men women and children being slaughtered and we get people here jumping on the PC band wagon and seeing offence when none is taken or intended. Nick names, and yes name calling, is part of life. Ask anyone who wears glasses has red hair is on the short side or tall. What about people especially young girls who are over weight.. Are they fair game. That can be really hurtful but people do it.
When the Irish jokes were doing the rounds my Irish friends thought that they were hilarious and they would take them home and repeat them to their spouses. Maybe it is an age thing but if i thought a nick name caused genuine hurt I would drop it straight away, but if name calling has become a hanging offence I think it's time for people to get a life.
Have these people never served in the Armed services. That would open their eyes.

i personally think there are lots of good football managers out there, without selling your soul and going with a racist, homophobic bigot. i think some things are more important. i'm glad i'm not a wigan fan - i would have a real moral dilemma on my hands, continuing to support the club with him as manager.

I'm not racist, I go to Barbados a lot.

    It's hilarious.

    Totally agree with this....

Very important racism is rightly wiped out in football & there is clearly a long way to go. Scapegoating older people, who clearly aren't spreading racist views only puts the cause back further. A bad appointment, I agree.... but the guy clearly isn't a racist.

    1. There is ignorance ... a lot of which the monkey noises at Oakwell in the late 70's / early 80's for Cec Pod & Winston were about ... black footballers in a white game in the UK. (Meaning all footballers are ridiculed for something, the less educated picked this method), not cool & still hateful, but ignorant.
(I didn't view monkey noises from a group in front of me in the 5-2 win vs Leeds a couple of years back in the same way... especially as they were voiced in front of my young niece & nephew I'd been entrusted to bring to their first Barnsley match.)

    2. Then there is the Nazi / BNP / Daily Mail / UKIP (the latter only in some people's view, not all) of inciting hatred of immigrants / minorities / outsiders. This is true racism & xenophobia.

Vital that people genuinely in group 1 are not treated like group 2, or a lot of good people will put be against proper progress, that otherwise they would support, if given the facts.

In the 1970s when I was a teenager you could buy 'n**ger brown' paint, no really it was described that way. The dog in the Dambusters was called the same. Folk were often described as being 'Coloured or Darkies'. A take away was a Chinky. Prime time telly had Love thy Neighbour where the black lead character was regularly called 'Sambo'. Gays were 'poofs' stereotypical represented by John Inman in are you being served... this was prime time telly ffs. Charlie Williams made a lot of money out of self deprecation.

We are miles away from this now thankfully but Whelan grew up in a generation where the common language was very very different to today. Doesn't make it right but I can recognise Dave Whelan in my parents generation.

Oh and for all folk let's say under 30 I remember an FA cup replay tie at Oakwell in 1990 when Tony Agana of Sheff Utd scored a penalty to win the game. The Ponte end erupted in a round of the most voiciferous monkey chants I'd ever heard. That was far more stomach churning that anything Whelan has said in my opinion.

As a kid I hated black jacks but loved fruit salads. So I guess I'm a racist Brighton fan. I do like black pudding though so fvck knows.

There's a lass who has recently started at work. Lovely lass and easy to get on with. She's from Keighley, is of Pakistani origin and is a lapsed muslim. Here are a couple of things she said to me this week:-

"I went to Bradistan yesterday. it's full of 'em".

"You were talking to an Asian lad yesterday - not sure which one as they all look the same".

"He speaks one of those daft Asian languages - Urdu or Pakistani or some ***** like that".

She's 27, has a law degree and has also done her LPC. She's not PC though.

The 'English born' muslims at work aren't as keen on the muslims who weren't born here. Proper weird.

Poles can't stand the Slovak's either.

I like everybody though. Except one ******. He's from London, and a lanky streak of piss.

I don't think she dislikes them - she doesn't identify with them. She knows that she can pretty much say what she likes and no one will challenge her.

I take the complete piss out of their religion. But they're ok with it. They take the piss back.

I wouldn't go out with a group of em as pals or owt. Their way of life is so far opposed to mine etc. I do have a couple of muslim lads who I've spent time with outside work. But they're British born and their version of Islam is diluted compared to many others.

More friendly with the Poles to be honest. Proper angry basterds though.

    I love people.

Oddly enough Singapore is very similar to this....

The locals who are of Chinese / Indian decent really are not very keen on Indians from India or China Chinese .... It really is very odd!!

Interesting thread this. I think I'm with the consensus that Whelan's a silly bugger, but meant no harm and there are bigger problems in the world.

What I don't get though, is why the hell he decided all this was worth it to employ Malky Mackay? Surely he knew the shitstorm that would come from employing him while the FA investigation was ongoing. Is he really that good a manager?

I bet plenty of us have got / had a Grandad that's made similar comments as Whelan? He's just a bit old & daft. Just needs someone else at the club to tell him to keep his gob shut on this issue & they'll deal with it instead.
