We're thinking about going at the end of May for 6 nights around the Novana area. Does anyone have any advice or recommendations?

    We've been.

Book the Colosseum and the Vatican Museum on line before you go oh and the Villa Borghese is worth a visit, again book on line in advance.

It is a fantastic city IMO from the GRRRR RAHHHHH !! masculinity of the Colosseum to the incredible beauty of St Peters and its Michaelangelo designed cupola.

Be prepared to do quite a bit of walking or use the metro... oh and the view from the top of the Monument of Vittorio Emanuele II is worth the cost of the lift to the top

oh and the Forum and the Palatine Hill , oh and the Trevi fountain, oh and the Spanish steps, oh and the Pantheon .... and the food !!!

One thing though, if you are visiting churches, the Vatican particularly wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. This also applies to your other half. You don't want to queue and be turned away.

    We loved it !

    Weird

I have just come back yesterday, been for four days. When I'm home I'll give you my views, it's the second time I've been and a few things have changed since I was last there in 2008

Did the "splendours of Italy" cosmos tour a couple of years ago, started and finished in Rome. Best holiday ever. Did the Vatican tour, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, colosseum, forum. I had my reservations about lugging the cases from hotel to hotel and checking in but turns out the coach driver does all the donkey work. You go straight to your room and the cases are outside your door in 10 min. He also loads the coach while you breakfast.

Flew from Leeds as well. :)

Only disappointing bit is there is graffiti all over the place.

UKIP/Tory coalition and they won't need to pull out if the EU to balance immigration!

I went, but it was on a rugby tour when England played Italy in the 6 Nations.

Consequently, I have nothing of any relevance to report to you.

    This certainly will not help.

I stayed in a hotel on Via Boncompagni a mile from the Spanish steps and Spagna & Barberini tubes. The tube is 1 euro 50 for a ticket that lasts for 140 minutes, very cheap but if you're looking to stay in Novona pretty pointless because you can walk everywhere from there and the tube doesn't go near the centre.

Colosseum - went on Friday, 10 mins queue probably due to it being in November. If you want a audio guide to go round with make sure you take some photo I.D, 12 euro entry including Roman Forum, 6 euro for the audio guide. Scaffolding currently up on one side and a lot of work being done around it, spoils the main photo you have of it looking up the road. Still a good shot as you come out of the tube station though. Nice wine bar across the road opposite the dead gladiators entrance with the cross, 6 euro a glass, really surprising in the location and surroundings.

Trevi Fountain - currently covered in scaffolding until October 2015. Nothing much to see at the moment although that didn't stop the Japs, crazy *******s.

Vatican - free to get in, queued for over a hr, couldn't imagine it in the summer but don't plan to go on the day before mass, the chairs are out and the areas inside to see are limited. Unable to see the statue of St Peter due to this or get close to the tomb as we went on Saturday. Do go up to the top of the dome though, brilliant views across Italy. 5 euro each by foot or 7 euro in the lift, either way you come down in the lift anyway. 352 steps to the tops and quite knackering.

Pantheon - free to get in, and in my view the best landmark in Rome, contains Raphael's tomb. Some nice restaurants and coffee shops around it.

Vatican Museum - no queues, entry 16 euro. Massive corridor of various frescos, Egyptian display and the main attraction the Sistine Chapel. No cameras, no talking, angry police, good with the eye though...he caught me taking pics with the iPhone with the reversible camera on. Only after l had got quite a few snaps of the ceiling! my advice, get in get a view snaps, you'll get told off but they don't take your camera off you and you've got the snaps - just don't put the flash on.

Taxis - don't bother with them - we were charged 15 and 20 euros for a 0.9 mile trip.

Airport - bus is return 8 euro, taxi over 30 euro each way. Bus goes to Termini train station.

Google Pasticceria Boccione - an old bakery in Rome and pretty famous, worth a visit. We also took in some of the Angels and Demons trail which is interesting if you like the book and film.

I watched Lazio v Parma when l was there in 2008, we flew home yesterday morning and l think Roma were at home in the afternoon but if you get the chance you can take in a match at the Olympic Stadium.

Been loads of times. Probably my favourite city.
Do the obvious things but in my opinion I wouldn't bother with the Vatican. Villa Borgese is my favourite place to visit. You need to book a time slot online in advance - you get two hours in there. Get an audio guide which takes you round in about an hour and a half then watch everyone else disappear and have half an hour to go back and see your favourite bits ( i.e. The Bernini sculptures) in solitude. Favourite eating places are Taverna Urbana on Via Urbana and Porca Vacca in an area north of termini with lots on good bars. Oh and if you like real ale go to the fabulous Open Baladin bar.
For something different go out to Ostia Antica and look round the ancient port then go on to the coast and have lunch on Venice Beach. One metro ticket will do the whole trip.

Thank you everyone, some really detailed advice there! I panic about everything so it's nice to have an idea of things to consider before I book.

I agree with Dave on all parts!

One thing, either have had a skinfull or taken a Prozac before sitting in a Taxi!

    It's an amazing experience :)

If you like drinking interesting beers there's a bar called 'Open Baladin' which looks amazing. About 500 different beers available I think. One of many reasons I really want to go to Rome.
