Have a look at this black and white Pathe News film, for those of you who can remember Oakwell as it was and those of you who are too young and have never seen the old ground before development. Did they really pack in crowds like that..... it's fantastic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0Die0d3jqE
Hiya mate, Great result today. What a difference a week makes. Gotta hope that the good form continues throughout the Christmas period. Would make for a very happy new year.
It would have been better if both teams hadn't been wearing the same colours (Grey Shirts and White Shorts). However did we put up with black and whit TV?
I went to the first game at Leicester. We did well there, and held them comfortably at 0-0. We had no floodlights in those days, so it meant replays kicked off mid-afternoon. Not a hope of getting time off school legitimately so I wagged it. Well worth the appalling bollocking I got for it, one of the stand-out matches in my memory. What's a day at school compared to that? The crowd was scary; the police had bullhorns and were packing us in on the terrace from the Kop end. By the time the match kicked off, I'd been turned sideways and had to watch the match over my shoulder. It was 25 years before the Hillsborough disaster, but it was one waiting to happen. At the end I got carried out of the ground by the sheer pressure of the crowd; I was only about 14 and hadn't yet discovered beer, so was able to experiment with lifting my feet off the floor. We came out onto Grove Street like pop from a shaken bottle. Brilliant day, but we should have won. By the way, I do believe that the legendary Norman Rimmington is the one on the right running onto the pitch to treat an injured player. He was trainer at the time.
Cracking stuff! 39,250 for that replay, so only 1,005 short of that record! I went when when we played them in the 3rd Round in 1969, when the crowd was about 25,000. I think the biggest crowd I've been in at the 'Well was 33,792 for Man City in the League Cup in '81. As GFT says above, scary and dangerous times. The custom in the West Lower then was for the crowd to dodge round the back of the stand at half time to the end the Reds were attacking. Not an ideal scenario with close on 34,000 in the ground. Lady Kaht always swears her feet barely touched the ground in the second half - though she always felt like that when we were coorting!
I suppose the trouble back then it was very common for folk to sneak in, particularly kids, so an official attendance of 40,000 through the turnstyles could easily be 50,000 in the ground. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was 9 years old at the time. As Oakwell did not have floodlights it was played in the on a mid week afternoon. I remember a lad called Kenny Riley, who was the goalkeeper for Highfields Primary School Wombwell, went to the game, wagging off school. As a punishment he was banned from playing football and did not get his league winners medal as a result. The Reds have always had. Reputation in the FA Cup. I went to all the games in their 63/4 cup run which culminated in a 4-0 defeat by Manchester United in the 5th round. I think my days as a supporter must have started about then.
I love the moment at about 54 seconds where the players clash in the middle..... just look at the number 10. It looks as if the number has been painted on or chalked on. How everything was so much more simple and innocent then. Sky TV would not approve !
I was there for that cup run in 63/64 as well and the Man Utd game was incredible. Law, Charlton, Best and the rest of them at Oakwell, strolling around without a care in the world! Talking about crowd "control", I started the game at the back of the Ponty End but couldn't see much at all and ended up on The Kop, near that old gate with the transfer turnstile (on the East Stand side). Perfect view from there. 38,000 in the ground and NO obvious segregation. I still have my ticket by the way - 2/6 (two shillings and six pence to see Man Utd).
I wagged a day of school for the match and have still got the programme ( 4d ) about 1 1/2p in todays money.
