Mostly stood just under the cover where the H is on Smiths . Can remember the away end being just an Hill with no steps as was the corner between ponty end and brewery end. The toilets were down some big wooden steps at back of brewery leading to an open air toilet which made the wsb look like luxury.
That's exactly where me and my dad used to stand, the corner of the Ponty End and the West Stand. I'm welling up.....
The "away" end My dad had a picture he'd cut out of a newspaper back in the 60s of the away end with 4 people on it during a game; him and 2 mates and a policeman.
Re: JLWBigLil and Sparky I have no problems with that, mate. It'll give me the opportunity to have a bit of a chunter about Les Harris, Chris Hedworth and Willie Ferry.
There was always a good head on the piss in there. It were at side of them kids used to climb ort wall and gerrin for nowt.
Climbed over there one night match and they were throwing bricks at us from the top of the Brewery/Ponty corner, shouting "Get back in yer b***erds"
A school mate of mine, Steve who still goes with me to Oakwell has one leg 2" longer than the other, he could stand there at 45 degrees.......
I know a lot of people liked standing on that corner and the one at the other side of the Ponty as well, but I could never see the attraction myself. Too far away from the dynamic action that we used to enjoy back in the 60s and 70s! Course, when the crowds started to swell those corners were as packed as anywhere else. I've spent parts of matches standing everywhere in the ground and, for one season only, sitting in the stand behind the directors box (that was during the Dark Ages (1966).
