The lad has a Stones-like poise to him - though way too soon to say if he is anywhere near as good.Thing is, the top 4/5 can speculate their loose change on lads like him - some of them will turn out OK. Bit like us with non-league/League 2 players, really!
If we learn from our previous experinece ie. John Stones, then we should get Mason playing regular football (at Oakwell, where he will be comfortable and relaxed) and try and get 50+ games out of him. Then we should be looking for serious money and the likes of Arsenal and Spurs have deep pockets. But it is very early days......
Bang on. Think stones gives us more bargaining power. Barnsley to England in one season. Would like to think we would suggest that £3m or £4m is a decent gamble on that pedigree. What's most impressive about our academy is it was Bree, Digby, Smith, Nana and Cowgill that I'd heard were the best potential. Then Holgate leaps them all. Long may it continue.
http://bbs.barnsleyfc.org.uk/showthread.php?220791-I-m-all-for-youth-but I don't think we or't to kid ourselves regrading this youff thing. It's just a production line. Some will make it,some won't If they are any good they will be snapped up. If not they'll fall by the wayside. Either way it would be foolish to think that anyone of em will be around that long. But with players wages being at an obscene level, it is a must at the moment. But lets not kid ourselves we are building a team for the future. The very best we can hope for is that most of them hit it off and play as a team, get us promotion, before they move on.
Seems far too early for top premiership clubs to be interested. He's hardly played a division three game yet. Looks like paper talk to fill column inches.
Makes it difficult for Danny to build when someone keeps nicking the raw materials. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
There won't be an offer made for him this season. It just says they're monitoring his progress. Could mean they'll have a scout at Oakwell 4 or 5 times before the end of the season. I fully expect Holgate to be here by the start of next season, so I'd be offering him a big deal about now, 4 years minimum so that we've got some negotiating power if a big club does come in for him.
Maybe the premier league should introduce champ league style maximum squad numbers. At least we might have a fighting chance to build a ****ing side. But then again all it will do is inflate wages even more. I have no solution other than to say **** bleeding off and let us nurture our kids ffs
Holgate, Bree, Smith, Cowgil, and Tempelton, have all got bright futures ahead of them, from what I've seen of them over the past 18 months they are head and shoulders above anything that's come through our academy in all time it's been running even stones wasn't as advanced in his development as what Bree & Holgate are/where at 15/16/17 years old. I think 2 or 3 of the aforementioned 5 are good enough to get 100 first team games under their belts before they're 21/22 years old and be moving to top clubs and top money if they stick with BFC, if they choose to leave for the money now who knows what will happen but if they continue their apprenticeship at Oakwell they'll go on to be grates
We appear to have a decent batch of young lads coming through from the Academy at the moment. Great credit must go to Ronnie Branson and Mark Burton for their continued hard work. I don't know whether all of these lads will make the grade, but it's certainly enjoyable seeing them being given an opportunity with the first team.
I don't know, Andy. But I'd be more more than happy with the next Andy Liddell. Or Ian Banks. Or Stewart Barraclough. Perhaps the likes of Brad Abbott, Dominic McHale, Nana Boakye-Yiadom, Rhys Oates, George Maris can be that type of player.
No scouts from Arsenal or Spurs have been at Oakwell this season. If they're scouting him they're only doing away games
I've seen Man City, Newcastle, Spurs, and Hull scouts at Oakwell for under21s/18s this season Hull City scout was a stunning blonde milf.
