    Exactly just seems like jolly up, and a excuse to charge more for after dinner speeches because they've a few letters after their name

    Why don't you ask some of the thousands of community volunteers who get a Bit of local/ national recognition for their hard work and effort?

    Fair enough but what about all these that's earned millions and got honoured simply because they've been paying super tax for years ?,
    Ask these community volunteers what they think about footballers and other well paid public figures being honoured at the same time as them and getting all the lime light Just because they've as a jolly up twice a year and auctioned a few signatures.

    I think they are a great way of recognising those who give their time and efforts to charity and the local community. Sadly they are devalued when they are given to people for no other reason that it is popular or gives political gain.

    I agree it should be ditched. It would stop people like Sheridan Smith getting an award for one popular tv show she did Cilla. Or when the likes of Kelly Holmes and Rebecca Adlington have one good olympics.

    so is it the idea of honouring people for the good work they've done that you're against, or just the selection criteria? i personally think there's some amazing people out there, who should be recognised.....i don't think sheridan smith is one of them though

    I'd get rid of the whole thing. But if it must stay at least have those famous people who get honoured have to earn it over many years. Like why Bruce Forsyth became a Sir. Why isn't Ronnie Corbett a Sir? The guy has done more than enough. James Corden is going the right way but his is about 15 years too early.

    Too right, and that's why I curse myself every time for looking at who has received honours from the rich and famous only to get wound up when I read it!

    Rules of thumb for honours:

    1 - any actress who is over the age of 70, has worked in the theatre and is still working gets a damehood
    2 - Olympic or Commonwealth medal = honours
    3 - large donors to current government = knighthood
    4 - ex-Cabinet MPs who haven't had to resign over political or personal scandal - go directly to House of Lords
    5 - anyone senior within a field of the arts that posh people watch - definite honours

    It goes on. Just drives me mad.

    A stupid anachronism that needs to be ended and replaced with a different method of rewarding community volunteers. Last year was working for someone who was quite open about using his money to, in effect, buy an honour.

    The point is that it helps keep the inequality of the class system going. The little fish get little gongs. The Rich, Upper and political classes get big gongs.
    It reminds everyone of their place in society.

    Especially Corden - OBE for services to omnipresent blandness.

    I like the idea of people "having to earn it over many years," as if Kelly Holmes just woke up the morning of the Olympics, thought "I'll pop along and have a crack at this running lark" rather than spending years and years training for it.
