With a rictus on my face and a body numbed by the cold at today's match I wondered at what level of low temperature it becomes unsafe for spectators and for players to be at Oakwell.
Has a game ever been postponed because of the cold despite the pitch being o.k.

Back in the old days, before undersoil heating, pitches froze as temperatures dropped and games were called off due to the pitch being solid. These days we have undersoil heating so the pitch may be safe but health and safety dictates that the surrounding area is unsafe for fans so games are called off even when the pitch is ok. We're not really any better off than we were in the 70's.

I didn't feel that cold in the ground yesterday. It was much colder at Preston on boxing day.

Under soil heating means pitches are very rarely unplayable and there may be no snow or ice on the terraces. However what if it's so cold and windy that the temperature + wind chill is well below freezing - at what level does it become unsafe for both players and spectators.

I've been far colder at a match than yesterday, the one that sticks out as being particular cold was a Friday night game against Watford about 15 year ago, never been as cold in my life

I've watched up play in some bloody freezing conditions so I'm not sure if there are even rules to dictate a trigger for cancellations, I don't think outdoor workers are covered by the same rules as office / indoor workers. I've also seen games played our in Russia when its been significantly colder than it generally gets here. I would have suggested that the FIFA website would have been a good place to look but seeing as they didn't even know it got hot in Qatar in summer its probably a waste of time expecting any guidelines about the cold and wind chill.

I can hear the good folk of Verkhoyansk asking what all the fuss is about. It was a bone chilling -50 there last night.

While I was in the Army we spent two months up in the northern tip of Norway during January and February and that was incredibly cold, like nothing I've ever felt in this country.

One night during an exercise I genuinely thought I was going to die it was so cold. No amount of 'special' military Arctic clothing helped and it was a tactical exercise so we had no fire or bugger all. I'll never forget how cold it was.

I'm making progress, albeit slow. The plaster is off and I'm having physio to try and get my ankle working again but it was badly damaged so its going to be quite a long and slow process. There also appear to be problems with the screws in my ankle but I'm hoping this will ease.

Cheers mate. Fortunately the Arctic fun and games was over twenty years ago now and it can stay where it belongs, in my past.

Pub I used to work in years ago had a massive walk-in freezer in the cellar that was normally set to -18, we used to lock each other in and see how long we could take it (childish I know), was probably barely a minute before I was braying on the door to be let out so I can't imagine what it must be like in Northern Europe or Canada, I have been to Canada (BC and Saskatchewan) but only in the Summer where I found the weather to be pretty similar to here but maybe not as wet, hard to imagine the swing in temperature between summer and winter that occurs there.

A mate of mine would have probably been up there at the same time, I could never understand why there would be a particular emphasis on arctic warfare though? When would those skills come in handy?
