https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/john-stones.58931/page-231 This is the best one for me... ......I'm old, I'm very old and I would already play him CB in the best Everton X1 I have seen. He's an outstanding talent, has a brilliant attitude and proper intelligence.
Proud as punch as he's a Penistone boy but £3 million is heartbreaking. Let's hope the sell on is 25% as he is in for a very big move soon.
No, it's not. We probably should have got a bit more, but it's a million miles away from heartbreaking. For a young lad that had played 20 games in the championship, do you really expect any team to pay more? You might say "keep him them" but a) I believe he wanted to leave, and rightfully so, he advanced his career massively, and b) he wouldn't have got as good as he is now if he stayed with us, and it's possible that he would have fallen into obscurity. Grow up.
If the club that's coached and nurtured him since boyhood doesn't know his potential and true value then there is something seriously wrong. Everton had our pants down on the Stones deal. Whoever the decision makers were at BFC that agreed to the deal should be hugely embarassed.
Look what Leeds,Southampton,Sheffield United get for players who have/had no more experience than John Stones.
It's not about what we valued him at IMO. Everton had their valuation, and probably wouldn't have offered more (not can you expect more for a young defender, a striker, maybe, but defenders always go for less). Letting him go was the best thing FOR HIM, I don't think he'd be where he is now had he stayed.
I can't agree, we held all the aces and were well and truly mugged by Everton. Everybody could see he was destined to be one of the best talents in the country and £3m for that kind of talent is a proper kick in the nuts. I just pray they are good clauses in the deal.
I think Don Rowing summed it up perfectly when he refused to confirm the transfer fee by saying if the fans knew theyd be annoyed or words to that effect
We were totally ripped-off. It strikes me that the view of the club was: we're tiny, irrelevant Barnsley and we should be honoured to be selling our astonishingly-gifted youth player to the great Everton. What? You'll give us actual money for him? We are grateful, mighty Everton (who have done two parts of **** all, anyway, since the 1980s). We were utterly, utterly ripped-off. If Lionel Messi had come through our academy, we'd have flogged him for £5million, and many of us would spend the next 20 years saying: "Hasn't one of our own done well? I'm so proud of him!" while the club itself plummets through the divisions. It was a disgraceful piece of business.
Surley were due some more when everton sell him. Cant see him stayong there all his career he will want to win titles. Anyone know what percent of sell on fee we would be due?
That's part of the problem, nobody except the liked of Cryne, Mansford and The Don know. It could be nothing but as far as I'm aware we haven't had it confirmed.
The annoying thing is that when they come to sell him it will be cryne, mansford, rowing, taylor, anyone else high up at oakwell, john stones, everyone high up at everton, any high up former everton staff, any high up former oakwell staff, johns agent, barnsleys agents, solicitors (presumably), the fa, any and all interested scouts (there is absolutely no way that I believe they wont find out), any and all interested clubs and their high up staff and directors. The only people who wont have a clue will be us, the fans.
Could it not be figured out by looking at the accounts? I'm sure you can download them off company check but i don't really know what I'm looking at - sure one of the resident accountants on here will though.
I couldn't disagree more. We held all the aces. A Barnsley lad, on a long contract - we had no reason to accept that bid then. There was no way Stones would have 'gone on strike' if Barnsley had held out for his true value. We were mugged.
I think we were mugged, but that's history now. I would like to think the club have learned from this and any sales of future stars would reap far more rewards for Barnsley FC and it academy.
Yes I remember that! Was is something like £200k we received and he was worth far more. Didn't help it was to the Fowls either
Maybe so, that was based on calling it heartbreaking. There are many things in life that are heartbreaking... This is just football.
