I know there has been plenty of threads in the past regarding this topic. Does anyone else get the impression he isn't involved as much as he should be? I don't know what happens behind the scenes but I'm sure Ill be told.
Maurice Watkins is a figurehead, a respected name. He has high level connections and experience, footballing and legal, that he will have established during his time on the board of Manchester United and as a partner in his legal firm. Impressive as they are, these are not qualities that require him to be involved on a day to day basis at the football club. We have Ben Mansford for that. It is quite enough that he is at the end of a phone or monitors progress of the club at monthly meetings with the directors and the owner.
In the business world a Chairman is very rarely seen or heard, it's just in the past and historically in football the Chairman has always being the spokesperson. The CEO heads up operations and the running of the club/business, with support from the other 'heads'.
My guess is that he's involved when we need him to be and no more. Useful guy to have though, very well connected.
He'd dose **** all, he's just a very experienced bloke for Ben to fall back on if needed, and Paddy to swill whiskey with .

That's right, Loko. When I worked for an educational charity (1990's), my boss was the Chairman of our Trustees whom I had meetings with several times a year. The rest of the time he let me get on with things on my own. At the time he was also Chairman of BP, Chairman of Barings (Merchant Bank), and sat in the House of Lords. When I asked him how many days a week he worked as Chairman of BP, he said "one day a week" generally!!
He's to busy fighting for the rights of the big boys to get into as much debt as they want. Which was supposedly the mirror opposite to the way we supposedly want to do things.
He must offer something. I can't see Pat, or Ben for that matter carrying a passenger. Not one that isn't cheap anyway.
Totally. We've got a Chairman here at my company. We notoriously (within the industry) went nearly 18 months without a CEO, and we heard from the chairman almost every day through internal news round ups, performance updates, etc. Since we appointed our CEO well over a year ago we haven't heard from him once, and he's joined a couple of other boards as a non executive director.
He's often at matches, so its not as though he's just disappeared. I'm glad we have him here, someone with a bit of experience.
