Yeah, thats the one. Proper enjoyed it, it was fascinating.

what struck me was the stories of how we treated them so well that many stayed after the war and made a life in England.

 

Harrowing.

Puts a lot of things into perspective. Flat tyre this morning? Easily sorted. Team two points from relegation places? Not the end of the world.

No matter how often I watch or read these kinds of things I still cannot understand man's capacity to commit atrocities upon one another.

 

Auschwitz is a LOT more than bricks and mortar. Take away the crowds of visitors and you could imagine you were back in the 1940s. Because the camp is not in Germany - it's in Poland - they have not "sanitised" it as much as some German camps have been. Dachau, for example, is a strange one. You would barely believe there had been a death camp there and it is overlooked by modern houses as if it were a public park. The buildings at Auschwitz are full of terrible reminders - timelines of information and photographs; huge piles of broken toys and battered suitcases; a truly shocking glass case from floor to ceiling stuffed with human hair. The cell blocks are as they were left. It's all a bit overwhelming to be honest but don't imagine that you would be bored. Shocked to the core maybe, but not bored.

 

I've heard that said before, is it true?

 

At the three I have visited, yes it's true

 

been around bergan/belsen a few times, I was station just up the road in soltau with 7th armd bde and all our armour was in hohne just a mile or so from the camp, theres a museum and such there, its a very humbling experience, if you've got google earth have a look.

 

And to think there are Knuckle dragging morons who still try to deny the Holocaust ever happened!...I'll try to watch the programme on demand or catchup...it will also probably be on more 4 or something.

 

not much birdsong heard over Oakwell recently!

 

i visited auschwitz and birkenau in early december.................very moving and thought provoking..............birkenau in minus 8 weather was much more harrowing.............polish children are made to visit by the government....................the evil that men do.

krakow as a base is well worth a visit though...........and as a ex miner i enjoyed the salt mine tour..............

 

I watched it last night before bed. The graphic footage didn't bother me too much in comparison to the reactions of the people they interviewed. Very moving but an important piece of film for anyone to watch.

 

Recorded it, went to Auschwitz a couple of years back, very moving, believe me you will not just think it's a group of old buildings.
