I get the point you're making, wbwd4, but I thought the fans were quite restrained yesterday given what they've apparently witnessed on the road lately and how lamely we surrendered once we went a goal behind. They collectively voiced their displeasure at the final whistle but I don't think there was all that much in the way of excessive criticism that would have been audible to the players during the match other than some chap at the back of aisle 35 who seemed to go into a state of apoplexy for the final 10 minutes. Most of us were reduced to muttering obscenities and expressions of frustration under our breaths. Also, fair play to the lads who incurred the wrath of the stewards for the heinous crime of standing up at the back and singing. I suspect the vocal, targeted, individual abuse is more prevalent at home games.
Yes, he did ... and was promptly dropped for the next match (not for the first time). Why pick someone in the first place if they have no chance of staying in the team?
It has been quite the opposite this season. The players have been unable to respond to the backing they have received from the stands, and now it is the spectators that couldn't care less. When was the last time you saw this team "raise their game"? They play at a turgid pace that is painful to watch.
I was expecting some grief for my comments, but to be clear I know at the moment we are struggling and the team are playing way below what we want. Danny has not got it anywhere near right and doesn't look to be able to turn it round. It's not good enough. My comments are based on what I've seen at oakwell and a number of away games and I feel that negativity aimed at certain players is picked up by the young lads in the team and they are affected by it aswell, they become scared to try anything for the fear of becoming the next target. This is not aimed at all fans just the minority who I hear for 90 minutes calling Jennings a fat etc. The abuse given to the shocking TK had an affect on others in the team previously. This is not the main reason we are so poor, I know that, I have only made a comment relating to something that happens at all ground s in football that I don't like
As I say, this happens at every ground in the country but most teams are better than us. Fans of all teams boo and shout abuse at their players. I really don't think you have a valid point here.
You are probably right, I couldn't work in that environment tho and I don't believe it's part and parcel of being a footballer and I doubt our players are earning massive money a week as to not be affected by it. Cheers
Abuse aimed towards players is completely counter productive and says more about the abuser than the abused. However, in the East Stand Lower there's one bloke who screams a bit, but it sounds so comical that everyone laughs. There's a few swear words at poor individual play, but that's about it. Everyone else is willing the team on or sat there in apprehension. The young uns get praised for anything good they do. A chorus of boos at half or full time is surely accepatable, if you feel that way inclined, if its been awful. I booed once, after the Charlton game. Cos I was the only one still there at the end. I had been left in a position of responsibiity, you see.
Completely disagree with your opinion. Berry was excellent at the start of the season and was easily one of our best players. He might have had a bit of a dip lately but there's players worse than him in this squad let alone 'ever at oakwell'. He's a young player who has shown potential and doesn't deserve to be castigated and written off after half a season playing 2 leagues higher than he's played before, most of which he's played very well in my eyes.
I wouldn't ever say Berry has been excellent this season. He's been above average in 2-3 games. The rest of the time he's been somewhere between very poor, poor and okay. In recent games he's been consistantly very poor. What's most worrying is that he's played them games in his favoured central midfield position.
All I can say is you must view games differently to me or look for different things in players because I'm my opinion he's had substantially more than 2-3 good games. If I remember correctly there was a thread on here not so long ago where a sizeable chunk of people were picking him in their top 3 for player of the season so far. Hardly seems to be worth csstigating him as one of the worst we've seen in recent years? Genuine question, how many midfielders have had a better season than Luke Berry to date?
I've attended all but 5 or 6 games home and away this season, and I have to say Chris has a point. The one game I can remember him having a stormer was Sheff United away. Unfortunately, in the other 20 odd games I've seen him play I've not seen enough to suggest that he's going to be a good player for us at this level. He doesn't score goals (despite getting 14 for Cambridge albeit 2 steps below this), his forward passing is often wayward, and he's too lightweight when the opposition has the ball in midfield. The one thing he does do is try his best every game, which is more than can be said for Hourihane recently. And he is still learning his trade at this level. I would love to be proven wrong and for him to develop into a great player for us, but on the evidence so far I can't see that happening. On the midfielders who have had a better season so far, I would say Hourihane purely for his goals and assists. And I think that says it all about the state of our midfield, as he's been a disinterested passenger for a long time now.
Fully agree. I think we played better with the Bailey, Berry, Hourihane combo but never found that 4th midfielder. We thought it was solved with Williams. Now we seem to have dismantled this base and have a trial and error approach to selection.
Only Conor Hourihane. The rest have been abysmal which is why we are struggling so much this season. Luke Berry hasnt been our worst player this season but at the same time he's done very little to prove he's good enough to play in this league. Form wise he's been better than Bailey but in terms of ability Bailey has shown a lot more.
I rate Berry, but I feel he's been played too often. I said about a month ago that a rest might do him good. But Danny has stuck with him. I think he'll be rested now though, because by all accounts he's struggled in the last couple of games.
Why wouldnt I have been? Who was worse than he has been? I cant see anything he brings to the table... And tbf while we're at it, Hourihane isnt much better either. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I could sit here all night reeling off midfielder after midfielder, worse than either of them. But I won't.
In your opinion. Let's not start presenting opinions as facts. Berry has been disappointing and his selection ahead of Scowen, Bailey and Digby yesterday was pretty baffling. He's had a break recently and Danny has brought him back for the last two games, so now he needs another rest? I hope Danny does rest him and someone else comes in and does a better job giving him an even longer rest, poor bairn.
