Scowen looks like the sort to do the scruffy work - exactly what we've been missing. Lalkovic worked hard and deserved to engineer the breakthrough. Jennings looked better near the end, having taken all game to get involved. Sam lit the place up when he came on. It took us most of the game to get ourselves going, but there were some better signs today eventually, albeit against a woeful Vale side. Although it looked hairy at times, playing all four of our centre backs did actually seem to lead to some good defending, even if we rose our luck at times. I didn't mind their goal so much because they had a stonewall penalty shout just before it. Now the acid test - can we back this result up? We all know Mellis will be giving 130% on Tuesday! Ho Ho!
We were lack lustre first half and they seemed happy with the stalemate.second d half seemed Danny got hairdryer out but we reverted to form after getting two up.imo
Three points despite a no more than OK performance. At two up we should have gone for a third to kill the game. Instead we sat back, went into our shell and looked nervy at 2-1. They had plenty of chances in both halfs but had a phobia for hitting the target so a good handful went skied over the bar.
Port Vale were happy at 0-0 with the chance of nicking one on the break, which made for an unbelievably turgid first half. Only Lalkovic provided any spark on either side and deserved to create the goal. Second half they had to come out which made for a much more open game and we rode our luck at times but just about deserved to hang on...
