Swearing at football

    A woman in front of me last night ( not seen her all season) complained at me for calling Conor Hourihane an idle *******

    Now she wasn't complaining because she loves Conor she was complaining because i swore in general

    Whats people opinions on swearing at football.

    I hear it all the time and tbh i swear alot - like many i suppose

    If i was sat in Family area behind a child i could understand but surely people come to football and expect to hear swearing at some point

    I absolutely hate swearing in general conversation. I think it just shows a lack of standards. Swearing in public with a complete disregard for passers by is worse.
    I know very clever people who swear in general conversation, and it makes me cringe.

    However, I've been brought up on 30 odd years of football and to not expect swearing is naive. Doesn't mean I have to like it. I have sworn at matches at times, so I understand the frustration, but I keep it under my breath (Gary Willard being the only exception). Seeing grown men completely lose it with a tirade of expletives is about as unattractive as it comes.

    Btw What has the fact that you've never seen her before got to do with anything? Does it invalidate her complaint? BFC is promoting the venue as a family club, so my guess is that the club would back up her complaint, not the right of the people who want to swear.

    I think you have to expect it - its always been there but there are levels
    Calling a player an idle fcuker is just part and parcel of the game
    Same for calling the ref a wnaker or barsteward etc
    One of my favourite ever football chants is the old Ronnie Moore hat song

    But there is a point where it can become offensive -for example at the Wembley cup semi final I had quite a few young families around me and a group of Morons just behind who were f'ing and cnuting all the time and chancting racist obscenties. One of the parents just in front of me asked them if they would mind toning it down a bit because of the children around- all he got was a torrent of abuse and they got worse just because they were thugs. Was annoyed that the Stewards ignored them even when the racist chants were pointed out

    What really p1ssed me off as well were they were insisting that as they went home and away every week and so had the right to behave as they pleased. - I go to a fair few away games and recon I know by sight at least all the real die hard regulars - Id never seen them before - and fortunately not seen them since

    I'm more of the view it's part and parcel of the sport if it's all done collectively as that shot just fizzes wide or a bad tackle goals in. Those who break a silence with a personal outburst could do with a bit more class.

    The reason i mentioned that it was the first time i have seen her was because i swear every match and never had a complaint since (thats not to say people around me agree with it they may just decide not to say anything)

    Agree with everything you say on this

    If children are around i will try my best not to swear . But in the heat of the moment i do swear

    Your only have to listen to the players to see how much swearing is going on so it should be hardly surprising that SOME paying customers react the same way

    To be honest, those are the folks who get me.

    The ones who completely lose it, and go into a lengthy effing and jeffing rant, with arms waving fists clenched, or fingers pointing.

    They have no sense of whereabouts, or the fact that (most) people around them are thinking "Sit down you silly sod"

    I've never said a word to anybody at a match about behaviour since Leicester away when we asked the lads in front to stop swearing & to sit down. We were then subjected to 45 minutes of taunting, verbal, and almost physical abuse (young blokes squaring up to me). My Mum and sisters moved away, but I stood my ground, probably stupidly. The worst 45 minutes watching Barnsley ever.
    Their arguments ranged from "bet this your first ever game", to "what do you expect at a match" to "sit somewhere else". Just horrible.

    Had the same experience at Burnley away a few years ago. This time it was less aggressive and a bit more laughable because they were kids acting all hard, but even then I didn't say anything. But I did mention it on here when I got back, and got plenty of grief for my thoughts then.

    Thing is at home games, if you feel strongly about it, you can go in the Family enclosure. At away games it's a lottery.

    I think there is a time and place for it, i have been fetching my lad to Oakwell since he was 4 yr old , anyone swearing around him for the first few years i would have a go at, but now he is 15 he probably knows more swear wordss than me

    Most of the time it's water off a ducks back to me. I've been watching football long enough to expect it. Sometimes it's funny. I'm not that precious. Now the daughter I bring to football is 15, I expect her to have heard it all and worse at school, but there have been times when I've found it very distasteful and unpleasant.
    I just think most of it is unnecessary.

    But do carry on :)

    A fair amount of years ago when i used to take my 5 year old nephew to the game his mother once asked him where do you and uncle bry stand, uncle bry stands with a lot of misters he replied , but where do you stand then she asked...some times uncle bry sits me on the metal bar at front of all the misters then he sends me to stand near the wall....whys that his mother asked are you naughty....no he replied its so uncle bry and the misters can call somebody a blind bast##d...

    I occassionally swear at football but just at a normal volume, I don't like when people shout it really loudly or for a long time. I have been known to give people 'the look' before if they are swearing and there are a lot of kids nearby and I definitely give young kids the teacher stare if I hear them swearing. The only time I have ever told anyone off at Oakwell was when an old lady called a player a 'p***'. When I asked her to please not use that word I just got an 'ooooh' back but she didn't say it again.

    a naïve post - To the swearers I'd say look around you - do you really think all those in earshot are happy with bad language or might there be some who are not but feel too intimidated to say anything.
    Swearing in public is a subtle form of bullying - BL is it your belief that if you want to swear anywhere you have a right to do it?
    And lets not have the weak excuse that it's part and parcel of the game - it isn't.
    The swearers may be surprised to know that it spoils the atmosphere and they will never know how many people don't come to the match because the expect to hear swearing.

    I never once said its my right to swear

    But that doesn't mean i don't do it

    I could come on here and say I never swear at football but then I wouldn't be telling the truth

    I just wanted other people opinions
