Oldham fan here in peace. You may have read in Tuesday's match programme about the Ernie Cooksey Flag that was on its first visit to Oakwell. Each such visit gets its own report on the day out, and you can read this report and all about Ernie and the Flag's exploits with Latics and England on the link. The best of two poor teams won the other night. Good luck for the rest of the season. http://www.ernieflag.co.uk/site/index.php/the-tour/5-on-the-road/176-season-7-barnsley
Or two teams that cancelled one another out. I can understand why people didn't, but I enjoyed Tuesday's game a lot. I used to be a defender and I like watching teams who actually know how to defend. Both us and Oldham were very good at it. Cranie-Ramage-M'Voto-Nyatanga is probably the strongest defensive unit we've put out for many a year and with Pearson and Scowen in front of them it's no surprise to me that the goals against column has dramatically slowed down. Even Hourihane put a shift in down that left hand side. Putting out such a solid formation isn't what we want to see every week, but we needed the points, we got 'em and it's a great foundation on which to build. Also, all too often these days, a team scores after a mistake from the opposition. Oldham didn't make a mistake on Tuesday. Waring displayed some great strength, then played a perfectly weighted pass out to the wing, Lalkovic looked up, spotted his target, fired in the ball on to a sixpence and Kane volleyed it home. There was no poor defending, Oldham didn't do anything wrong, it's just that for about 10 seconds we were too good for them and that's all the time you need to win a game. Oldham didn't lose the game, we won it by scoring the type of team goal that would grace any league in the world. Obviously, we'd all like to see that happening more often, but if we just do it once per game and continue defending like we have been doing, this unbeaten home run should have plenty of legs in it. And we won't play teams as well organised as Oldham every week. There'll be plenty come here that will allow us to score without having to produce our best.
I missed the Oldham game due to being darn sarf (I used the 'poor game' phrase based on feedback on here) I did however enjoy the previous 3 home games, as did Tom, as we are both eager to see this rebuilding progressing, however hard that is to stomache. We have needed a plan for 8 years, this year we have one, and although there will be painpoints, I for one am keen to see the fruits of the project. If that means another season in this League, c'est la vie !
As a travelling England supporter i have seen Ernie's flag on a number of occasions and i have to admit i was expecting to see it Tuesday night and it was the first thing i looked for when i got in the ground, after the toilet that is due to having a half too many. My only disappointment on reading about your experience in Barnsley is that you were put off coming into the town centre. Although like all clubs we have to suffer the odd idiot you would have been fine. If you are up next season feel free to get in touch and join us for a few beers and enjoy some real Yorkshire hospitality as long as you are paying, how more authentic could that be.
