That's a very loose definition of "fan" - I was thinking more along the lines of "moron"

They'll be arresting people for farting without owning up to it next.

I heard the seat started it and it was merely self defence. Fcking Police.

I have to say I have zero confidence in how football is policed - I've not been arrested but I have had a few runs in with them at away games which they have caused themselves so I'm always sceptical of the extent of the supposed criminal behaviour that away fans get locked up for.

I'm not saying in this case the person arrested didn't deserve it, I wasn't there and know nothing of the incident, but I've seen it too many times where the actions of the police are miles over the top - particular after the game when being lead away from the ground.

SY Police's behaviour after Sheff U last November was ridiculous, indiscriminately hitting people with their batons, over three months later I can still see the confusion on a gentleman's face who must have been early 60s at least - whacked around the side of his face simply because he was in arms reach.

You're not wrong mate, sometimes they're worse than the idiot "fans"

I got a slap from one of SYP's finest after the Wednesday game last season as I was moving away from the bus station as it all kicked off so I could go and sit in a nice warm pub.

You could put 500 coppers outside a One Direction concert, tell the coppers it was a football match and they'd probably find a way to make a few arrests.

The whole mentality towards football is wrong, yes there are a minority of idiots, generally though they are more the nuisance types who are a bit loud after drinking a bit more than they can handle.

As someone who has been to a lot of away games, some where you don't see a copper all day and a lot where you can't shift for them, I often wonder whether the police themselves contribute to changing the atmosphere and inciting anti social behaviour.

I'd like the police to experiment, maybe deploy some very standoffish plain clothes police to just observe.

I suppose the pessimist in me wonders whether they have got used to the overtime and don't want to jeopardise that by admitting that football matches are over-policed and full of iffy arrests.

Or you could go to a match - enjoy it and not do anything to warrant attention from the police. It's easy enough

If you get arrested for smashing a seat up I'd say that's fair enough, you can't complain.

Hm, funny isn't it. Some people think it is absolutely fine to smash up the seats that they don't want to sit in, or smash up the catering facilities under the stand. Then there is the abusing of the little crew across the dividing line of stewards - great laugh that. Oh and the smoke bombs, flares - just playful high jinks, nothing to attract any attention.

Me? I go to watch a football match. Whether I enjoy it or not depends pretty much on the result. It has nothing to do with how much trouble I can get away with. I believe people who say that they have seen the police acting badly, provoking trouble. History proves that this can happen any time, anywhere in the world. It's never happened to me though. Could be because I never go near any trouble.
