"We thought the full-back areas were where the space was and we weren't exploiting them in the first half so we needed some pace out wide'' So his genius idea was to keep playing narrow and bring a young fullback on to play 2 positions at once?
He's lost the plot. Changing winning sides, having centre halfs out of position in full back positions, ten defensive players in the starting line up at Swindon, guys out in the cold like Berry/Bailey, **** signings allowed to be paid off etc.
What? ! Never had any width on the right all game, and Cranie just refused to go into the space. There were many times he could have bombed on, but just stopped. Baffling.
Wilson's rationale for using so many centre-halves across the defence is because they have experience; he wrote in one recent match programme that you know what an experienced player will do in a given situation - we saw that tonight! The game cried out for attacking full backs but it appeared to me that Cranie would either get a nose bleed going across the half way line or he was told not to. They have just purchased a very attack minded full-back in young George Williams so where was he tonight?
Willams has dropped down that dark hole that Berry's in, the one that Lita and Bailey occasionally climb back out of, the hole that Bobby and Reuben called 'home' last season.
I have no idea where we go from here. Seriously. Tonight has bamboozled me. I'm going to go to bed, do 8 hours graft tomorrow, and pretend it dunt matter. You apathetic reds.
Yeah we saw it for their first goal with Nyatanga doing exactly what M'Voto did the other week in heading it straight into the path of the opposition to shoot and score. The experience of Turnbull and Ramage should have dealt much better with the situation for the second goal. George Williams shouldn't be suited up for the legends suite. He should be on the field of play as he likes to get forward and has looked good in all his few appearances so far.
We have to play with two full backs that can get beyond the midfield. I'm not expecting Roberto Carlos and Cafu, but just someone willing and fit enough to get up and down the flank. Williams would have offered this. Smith would have offered it from the start on the other side. When we go to Crawley at the weekend I really hope, for Danny's sake, that we play some proper full backs. The back four we have had were exactly what we needed to grind out a couple of wins. It is NOT a plan to move forward with.
