How on earth will he con(vince) the beleaguered hardcore supporters to renew their season tickets?

I'm seriously considering packing it all in next season and I'm obviously not alone.

Because those who support the team will and this who don't won't.

Research shows that the traditional view of a 'hardcore' is actually a myth. With the dynamic of the crowd constantly evolving and changing and they key is attracting new fans to replace natural wastage. It's this given current circumstances that will be trying.

 

You've probably got some stats that claim 91% of season ticket holders only renew for two seasons at the most.

 

Mr Mansfield ought to be preparing and budgeting for crowds of 5-6000 next season.

 

Its going to be difficult especially if things don't pick up but I'll be renewing if only because I've nothing else to do on a Saturday. I reckon a fair few will renew for the same reason.

 

He talks a good game does Jase but he is kicking up hill wi this one. Wouldn't suprise thereev if he walked away.

No over a three year period a club will lose (from regular attendance) on average 10 percent of it's 'loyal' fans. There's a lot of research in this area. Fascinating stuff actually.

 

Yes but it isn't a changing 10% every year is it. By that I mean we don't work on a ten year cycle. The 10% will be made up largely of people who got a ticket for one year MD decided not to bother again. The long term fans are less likely to abandon ship than the newer ones I would say. The problem is that at the moment a hell of a lot of the long term fans are ready to say no more and that is a rare thing

 

That's the myth. The best research was done by Simon Kuipers. He found that at any given moment a clubs fanbase was split into 3 sections one of those being the loyal or die hard fan which accounted for approximately 40% of all fans. Based on commitment in terms of longevity and attendance and it was of this 40% that10% attitition rate fell into. Basically the more loyal you get the older you get and the more likely for reasons such as family, boredom distance etc you are likely to stop attending regularly. This happens at all clubs regardless of success and it appears that there is little to do to stop it. Clubs would be better concentrating on recruiting young fans rather than trying to appease the 'loyal' fan. I will dig a link out sometime.

 

As a long time season ticket holder I became so disillusioned last season due to the pathetic nature of the "struggle". It was not as if we were putting the effort into trying to stay in that league... we were doomed to relegation and quite frankly had been seriously heading that way for a few years.
I therefore decided not to renew my ticket despite the potential, under Wilson, to bounce back with a reinvigorated squad which I hoped would at least win more games than it lost.
My decision has been vindicated.
I have been to five home games, paying on the gate, as well as going to Doncaster. I have seen them lose five times !
I came home last night at 11 o'clock and said to the wife, "well at least I don't have to pay to watch that bag of ***** again, unlike the poor sods with season tickets".
The whole match experience is appalling from arrival to departure. The walk along Pontefract Road.... no cars queuing, hardly any people walking. On to Beevor Court (?)... sometimes I am the only person walking there, and that with 15 minutes to kick off. The dreadful East Stand concourse... like going into a funeral parlour. Nobody enjoying themselves, duty bound to be there. Then the lack of atmosphere in the ground. Like a morgue. Then the game itself. Nuff said. The amateurish attempt at half time "entertainment". The trudge away at the end.
Sorry guys, I'm glad I didn't renew, not just with hindsight but I can't endure this torture any longer... plus the 100 mile round trip not eased when the team performs as it did last night.

 

He'll not have to do a single thing for me to buy one. I support Barnsley football club and enjoy going to the games. We were **** last night, but I had a good night out, saw friends (some off here, some not) and family, had a row with someone who has been bugging everyone around us for years and shut him up, got drunk, lots of laughs, ate a dodgy kebab, stumbled home. We lost, we were dreadful, but it was still by far the best few hours of the week. When we win it's absolutely brilliant. Why on earth would I want to give that up?

Ben Mansford may or may not be good at his job, he may or may not be a decent fella, I don't know, but I know he wants to do well in that job because he's an ambitious bloke. Patrick Cryne may or may not be a decent fella, depends on your point of view, but I know for an absolute fact that he's desperate for our club to do well and has sunk more money in to it than most of us will ever see and any of us should expect. Danny Wilson is a decent bloke, he may or may not still be a decent manager, I think so, others don't, but I doubt even is harshest critics would argue he isn't still desperate for us to do well. So, whatever these three do, good, bad or indifferent, I know they're doing it for the right reasons and I know I'm not being conned or having the piss taken out of me.

We're not much good at the minute, but we haven't got a divine right to do well, particularly when we're sticking to a tight budget and having to rebuild from scratch. We're a small club that traditionally tends to play above the level of the number of home supporters it attracts if we ranked teams that way. At the moment we're about on par with that, but I think we'll get back up there soon enough because, for reasons I don't think any of us truly understand, the club, for all its faults, has got summat about it. I want to be part of that and I reckon there will be a fair number of others just like me when renewal deadline come around.

 

I think that's one of the most annoying things for me. Danny Wilson seems a thoroughly nice man so while football reasons say he should be sacked I do at the same time hate the thought of the poor bloke losing his job. However I'm sure he would get a good pay off (or would hope so anyway) so I guess that helps to take away the sympathy part a bit

As for Ben Mansford I think you'd have to go a long way to find a more personable and friendly sounding boss of a football club

Sums up how I feel. 42 years down the line and just going thru the motions. Just a habit, a labour of love but precious little enjoyment. All a bit sad.......

 

Why should he get a good pay off , the bloke is failing miserably in his position and not achieving what is expected . I wouldn't get a nice payoff if I was sacked so why do football managers deserve it. He'll not be without a bob or two and the club can ill afford paying out money to failures in sympathy

 

Because we have employed him to manage the football team. if we decide to take that contract away and sack him we have broken a basic employment law. simples really.

now if he was paid to win football matches (note hes not, thats just a by product of his employment contract) then as a performance related contract we would have a measure to judge him by and possible justification to sack him, depending on what level the 2performance" was set at.
