Why didn't people offer the same support to previous managers?

Unfortunately whitey, the club appears to listen to them. Sad state of affairs.

I did. Well, not to Hill. I didn't like him. Still don't. I'd love to say he's a **** manager but the b'stard keeps proving me wrong with Rochdale where he's continually done an excellent job. Never called for him to be sacked though, but after the team he selected and the performance in that Blackburn game I thought the club probably made the right decision. It looked to me like he'd given up and selected a team to get himself fired. Odd thing to do but he's an odd bloke. Maybe I'm miles off, but I don't think he was ever comfortable here. To be fair, I'm beginning to understand why.

I genuinely believe for a manager to be successful he needs everyone to be pulling in the same direction behind the scenes. Pretty much what Redfearn says in his autobiography as the reason for our earlier success under Wilson.

100%. I've said it loads of times before - it would be easy to come on here and think that the majority of us feel like the naysayers, when in fact it's about four people who spend what feels like whole evenings posting thread after thread saying the same thing.

For what it's worth, Davey was the last one who I wanted to go when he did. Everybody since then has deserved more time - especially, given the nonsense spouted out of the club over the summer, Wilson.

I've seen some shocking performances this season, and I've never heard a Wilson out chant. All ill will has been directed squarely at the players.

but doesn't that then pose questions around recruitment, tactics, coaching? i'm hearing lots of people even now, staunchly absolving danny of any accountability. i just can't get my head round that.

Yes but doesn't four managers in 2 years also bring other things in to question? Hill has returned to Rochdale and has got them motoring. Flicker has got Bury turned round and Mellon's doing a great job at Shrewsbury. Admittedly Mellon was only a caretaker but surely someone at the Club should have seen the qualities he possessed? Why do three managers all deemed not worth persisting with at Oakwell suddenly leave and transform the Club they went to afterwards?

take your point completely mate. however, i seem to remember that the fans backed every one of those decisions. i think we need to look at ourselves honestly as supporters as well. i honestly believe the majority of our sackings have reflected fan opinion at the time. only real difference that immediately jumps out at me, is that none of the other managers were called danny wilson.

I don't think that "everyone pulling in the same direction" will ever happen again, because of the internet and sites like this. Whoever the manager is, whatever the results, whatever the formation, tactics, selection or whatever, there will be some fans who don't agree and dislike the manager. They will come on here after a defeat and moan, but stay strangely quiet when we win. There will be others who come on to celebrate after a win, but keep stumm after a defeat. There will never be consensus, and perhaps rightly so, we are all entitled to our opinions.

Unless we just keep winning and winning of course, and open up a huge gap at the top of the league. Then there will be a semblance of consensus. But it won't last of course - we will rise up the leagues and eventually find our level, whereupon we will start losing again, and the old arguments will re-surface. What a sad state football is in, when people like me are scared of success because eventually it will result in failure because we can't compete. Have a nice day everybody.

Got a list of names crosschecked with examples of those people not showing support. No? Didn't think so.

    Shocking in relation to what.

Of the last 30 teams to drop from the championship only 4 have gone straight back up.

All of those four have been bank rolled significantly and have won the league at a canter.

Of the remainder only 3 have been relegated the same season - and those have been in serious trouble.(Portsmouth, Luton and I include Yeovil as they would be if the league stopped today)

Looking at the rest only Peterborough shows any significant form or pattern. They are a yoyo team and don't shed players or managers for fun.

So - we're not in massive financial trouble - we're not being stuffed full of money - and we're not currently like Peterborough. (Although a Championship / League One yoyo team may well turn out to be our natural position)

Taking teams that Barnsley would perhaps associate themselves with - Wednesday, Bristol City, Forest, Leeds, Sheff Utd. These teams tend to take a year or two to sort themselves out then bounce back in year two. (Sheff Utd being the obvious exception) And performance in year 1 makes no odds as to performance in year two. They can finish 4th and fail in the play offs or 18th. It don't matter for year 2. (Sheff Utd being the hilarious exception)

I cannot fatham out why anyone would therefore be shocked that we're around the middle of the table. This is the way of football. I'm not shocked Danny has been sacked. But thinking - right who'se the next manager - the name Danny Wilson does spring to mind as someone who has good experience getting clubs out of this situation. So whilst it's not shocking - sacking the manager who has the right skill set to do what we need - only to go and find someone else with the same track record and skill set as him seems a bit daft.

And yes - I'd have stuck with Flicker too.

I think a long term plan would work - short term plans without tonnes of cash definately don't.....those have been tried time and time and time again.

Maybe it would be nice to experiment as the one club with the balls to do something a bit different. But we'll never know with this lot in the Directors box. They seem to just do what football does..

    Shame really

I don't post much these days anyway, but in the past I have always hesitated to come on after a defeat because I've got better things to do than get involved in a slanging match with fellow posters. Some of the abuse that gets thrown about (towards other posters and towards players and club officials) is horrible, and that's why I used to be in the second camp.

No idea. Definitely not at work, though. Honest.

Seven points off the play off spots, and this from a team that has been almost universally panned as playing terribly. Surely this should have been taken as a good sign? Don't the experts always say that if you can play badly and win, then you're on the right track?

Danny probably has had a bit more leeway than some, but maybe that's because we're in no danger and people really bought into the idea of developing a team rather than trying to buy one for instant success?

I don't read the BBS after a defeat any more. What's the point of feeling worse?

Totally agree, and it's not just after a defeat but during defeats. When the first goal is conceded, there's the usual crop of "game over" posts, together with the "useless *****, f**** ****, ****, £$%£$^£$%, !"$"£$" posts from people not at the match.

After many years of research I've found that beer and wine provide an infallible solution to post-defeat depression.

Me too. And the company of people whose opinions I respect and enjoy hearing. I've found a number of such people on this BBS, but few, if any, who post after a defeat any more. They used to. And although you'd get the occasional rant, mostly they'd just cheer me up. We always had to deal with Dragon and Supertyke, but now there's a couple of dozen who make them two look like a couple of pussycats. There's more solace to had with a wall, your head, and a back and forth motion.

I'm not sure I've ever offered an opinion on the sacking of any of the last few managers (feel free to prove me wrong!). But if I had to hazard a guess to why some people might have wanted the last two gone (before Danny) I might look at the blatant nepotism and 'jobs for my mates' that seem to permeate a lot of the signings.

Now I might be way off base and I'm not trying to put words in peoples mouths, but it's just a thought.

What ever Danny's recruitment policy -or lack of as some people perceive it- it did seem on the outside at least to be based on trying to get in young hungry talent rather than making sure friends some of his mates got a decent contract.

Personally, I'm generally sad whenever any manager leaves - as that means we aren't doing very well.
