I had typed out a 600+ word post about how I felt about it all. I don't need to post it any more. This line from the article sums it all up as succinctly as necessary for me: "This is the first time in my life that I have felt alienated and disconnected from Barnsley FC.”
Re: I was sad and angry, now I'm furious Not heard the new record yet, loved Here's the Tender Coming
When there was talk of us possibly signing Ched Evans I really was prepared to totally disown Barnsley FC and walk away from a 41 year affair. It's much easier for me to go to watch Norwich, a round trip of an hour instead of nearly 6 hours driving for a home match. Danny's sacking hasn't quite done that, but it has led to some serious thought about next season.
As holes were plugged others were blowing open. I liked Danny. I'm sad hes gone. But at the same time I can see that it simply wasnt good enough, with no signs of getting better. I'd have been happy to plod along all season in midtable as long as progression was clear to see. Committed and passionate performances alongside a well thought out footballing philosophy. Unfortunately in most games Danny seemed clueless. It was as if there was no idea, philosophy or style of play. And it only seemed to be getting worse.
It depends on the circumstances. I was happy to see Danny here all season providing we avoided relegation. At the same time I can see reasoning behind his sacking. As explained above.
We just seem to be going round In circles. Fact is Danny has gone, rightly or wrongly nobody apart from the powers that be can change that. Personally I have no problem with his sacking, but I can't understand the timing and the fact we probably haven't got a replacement lined up.
The owner clearly didn't think Danny was the man to give even more money to and I totally understand that. He brought in some total garbage last season, Frimpong being the biggest waste of money and then he wastes even more on the likes of Brown, Treacy and Hemmings etc. he wasn't showing many signs of building anything worthwhile. Apart from Winnall, the luck of having Holgate come in and to do a decent job and maybe Scowen more recently, what else is there to be positive about this squad. Hourihane started well but has been shocking for the last three months. Sentiment is fine but hard cold cash is why he got the boot. It's sad but unfortunately money rules the modern game and with performances like those continuing there would have definitely been a significant drop in season ticket sales and Cryne would be getting dog's abuse for appointing him. There's absolutely no guarantee the next manager will be any better, especially as Cryne has a dismal record in his managerial appointments, but I feel he had to roll the dice. The club is in steep decline and Danny didn't look like he could turn it around without more money, having wasted loads already...
There are things that the club does not disclose. Lining someone up would be carried out with the upmost secrecy.
To use an analogy which sounds nice in my head but will be **** when I type it out, it's like you've got a knackered wall in your house. You employ a decorator in to patch it up, with a view to him painting it nicely afterwards. Halfway through he runs into a bit of trouble and it looks like it's going to take longer than you hoped and might be a bit more expensive. Rather than saying "ok mate, **** happens, crack on" you sack him and bring someone else in. He looks at it, tuts, says he doesn't really follow what the first bloke was doing so will have to start from scratch. He does, then halfway through he runs into a bit of trouble, and you're onto decorator number 3. And so on and so on. At what point do you twig that you aren't going to end up with the Sistine Chapel roof on your wall immediately and give one of them a bit of time - is it decorator number 5? Number 10? Number 397? I guess what I'm trying to say is that's what we have become. A knackered wall being tutted at by an endless succession of decorators who aren't given time to let the Polyfilla set before they can get their paintbrushes out. Or summat.
Easy to say when it's not your money. If you were paying out hundreds of thousands of pounds and getting no return you might think differently. Other clubs have made appointments that have seen an improvement. All we wanted was to see a glimmer of hope for the future. Fleetwood and Crawley...not much of a glimmer there.
So you're frustrated at spending hundreds of thousands that you offer so you spend another few hundred thousand pounds to fix it? Doesn't make sense. Not much glimmer so far this year but plenty in the first few months IMHO.
But Danny said I can knock the wall down and I can rebuild it I just need some cash. Danny then spends the money on a few new bricks. He starts laying the bricks but then don't like it so he rearranges it, pos in a few more but still don't like it. This he repeats for months and still no bricks in the hole. Asked why he says "half the bricks were duds and I need some more money to replace them". "No chance" Patrick see, go and borrow some. So Danny borrows a few, pops them in the wall and it keeps collapsing. "Well, we are worse than when we started". "Ben, tell him he's done, av been skanked"
Unless he doesn't turn it all around within one season, then what? Sack him and bring somebody else in. I was angry about Danny being sacked now after reading the article I am still angry and very sad. I'm really really pi55ed of with the club and this feeling is not going away.
It's nothing to do with turning it ALL around. Danny turned nothing around. We were actually getting worse.
Were we? We had some bad games but we were as close to the play-offs as we were to the drop. We had an abject away record but we were on the brink of breaking a club record for home wins. The decison to sack Danny stinks and so where now? The club is in turmoil and decline because we (the board) keep making the same mistake.
We lost against Fleetwood, which stopped us setting a club record for consecutive home wins. Yet we were getting worse? The season didn't start too well in my opinion, albeit we didn't lose much in August. We then had an awful September, before a couple of really positive months. We then lost Winnall, Williams and later Cole. We've been awful away since then and had to pick all kinds of teams etc. But our home form was quality. Sacked for that? And amidst all the context and circumstance? ******* ridiculous decision.
