Why shouldn't people on benefits have to do something. If we are paying them to sit at home, why can't they actually do something that is constructive and will help them to get employment. I can't see the problem with a couple of exercise classes per week combined with lessons to improve their skills (language, maths, IT, etc) to make them more employable.

They do have to do something, they have to demonstrate they are looking for work or their benefits stopped. If you are going to force people to work for their benefit, pay them the minimum wage

If you look around Barnsley, or presumably Dundee, there's a lot of things that could be done to improve it. For example if you went down to the River Dearne it's a dump with reeds growing everywhere and trolley's dumped. This could be made into a lovely area with some work but isn't currently being done. It's not about putting others out of a job, it's about doing the additional stuff that could do with sorting. I know it would probably be more expensive to manage etc but it would create jobs for team leaders, give people a chance to gain some skills and get some lazy bas'tards off their arses for a day a week.

Edit: The tories will use it to help large corporations like they do with zero-hours contracts but if managed properly I think it would be a good idea.

I'm not agreeing with the 30 hours don't get me wrong, I'm thinking more like 8 hours a week. Btw it's not impossible to get yourself a job whilst working, most final year university students manage it (including me) so it wouldn't be an excuse for people that don't want to get themselves a job.

It would be a good idea to give people on the dole jobs in the community - as mentioned above, work in the community that wouldn't otherwise be done.

£57 a week is a joke though - if they're working they're working, and need to be paid minimum wage. 30 hours wouldn't even be bad if they were paid a real wage.

The whole issue of this for under-25s is ridiculous too. Cameron assumes that everybody can live off mummy and daddy for years, which many can't

Politicians make me angry. Are Labour much better than this? Not particularly. That's why I'll be voting Green - the protest vote of the left wing if you will...

(Waits for Greens to gain a few seats and immediately sell-out for a tiny bit of power)

I've been a student myself so know the amount of work that takes....

There's a minimum wage in this country to protect against exploitation so as long as they are paid that I have no issue. Still doesn't help the poor saps who will be made unemployed who are currently doing these roles.

You are lucky to have a minimum wage. When I was in London I was totally reliant on my parents to support me as my salary as a graduate was £250 per year. The year 1964. Things got worse when Labour got in and the fares to get home to see my parents doubled.

    Awww poor you !

Always the fault of Labour eh ? Imagine , wanting people to have the chance to be paid a decent wage instead of all the money going to the directors and shareholders !

Hear what you are saying mate but the way it is to be implemented is all wrong. Forcing young folk to do menial tasks and not pay a decent wage is not far off slave labour.
Yes there are plenty of places in Dundee needing tidied up, painted, cleaned etc but forcing / blackmailing young folk to do it is all wrong. Anyway lets hope that Cameron and co are kick into touch in May and this bullying of the unemployed will never happen.

The Tories are so contradictory it's unreal. We're all supposed to want to 'pull ourselves up by the bootstraps' and aim to be successful high achievers, yet we're told scrapping about picking up litter is good for us and makes us employable.

I was on the dole for 6 months after graduating from uni. If they'd have told me I had to do menial tasks or else starve I'd have gone ******* apeshit. Not that I think I'm too good for it, but what kind of society asks you to get into tens of thousands of pounds of debt to get an education and then end up cleaning the streets for your bread?

It is slave labour, pure and simple. If there's a job to be done, allow somebody to make a bloody living doing it.
