    Has got to be a young, recently retired pro & hungry to make it in management :

    Alan Clarke - player manager (success)
    Norman Hunter - newly retired pro (success)
    Danny Wilson - player manager (success)
    Andy Richie - newly retired pro (success)

    Can't recall any seasoned managers ever doing much!

    So .... Craig Hignett with Nicky Eaden in a supporting role it is then!

    Interesting spot.

    I suppose it might be in his favour he would be taking over a team full of players not much younger than he is. Had we had a team of seasoned pros such an appointment might be a bit more difficult....

    Johnny Steele-won promotion 1967/68, appointed from within the club;
    Allan Clarke-won promotion 1978/79, appointed from outside the club;
    Norman Hunter-won promotion 1980/81, appointed from within the club;
    Danny Wilson-won promotion 1996/97, appointed from within the club;
    Andy Ritchie-won promotion 2006/07, appointed from within the club.

    Although it's worth bearing in mind just how much help the promotion winning managers of the last fifty years had with the experience of the likes of Norman Rimmington, Gerry Young, Barry Murphy, Bobby Collins & Eric Winstanley to fall back on.

    So....Mark Burton, with Paul Heckingbottom in a supporting role it is then!

    Even if da nu boss wins promotion next season, blood, he'll be art before da Christmas trimmings are up if we don't carry on winnin', innit? Coz that's what we do and us from da 'hood like it like dat!:)

    We do seem to have a lot more success with the new manager approach Apart from Basset who got us to the playoffs none of the expertienced managers have done much

    Of course not all appointments from within have worked so well - Glyn Hodges for example - though there were extenuating circumstances and I was never a great fan of Simon Davey - that said he got us to an FA cup semi final

    Not really sure that starting with a 5-1 humiliation is the ideal start though :)

    I think if we dont see a big improvement on Saturday we can discount the Burton Hecky idea

    Another example.:D
    Allan Clarke, Norman Hunter & Andy Ritchie have all managed us to promotion. Despite the board transferring the likes of Ronnie Glavin & David Geddis from under him and despite having to play in front of crowds around 4000, Bobby Collins kept us in the top half of the old 2nd Division for practically all the season he was manager.
    Therefore, it's imperative we sign a manager with a strong Leeds United background in order for us to be successful.
    So....Brian McDermott it is then!:D

    We rarely appoint anyone experienced preferring the cheap options so its hard to tell
    Appointment of john hendrie worse decision we ever made I know that

    We sacked all of those as well.

    Also

    Steele - relegated to Division 4 1964/65
    Wilson - relegated to Championship 1997/98, relegated to 3rd Division 2013/14

    It's a lottery mate. they can get us promoted one season and get us relegated another.

    Correct, but does a relegation negate a promotion?
    As I said, mate, it's easy to make a theory fit. Although I must point out Johnny Steele was never sacked, age prompted his move upstairs (so to speak).

    The strange thing is Steele got us relegated before he got us promoted. That would never happen in this day and age.

    He was manager in two spells - did he move upstairs twice or did he move upstairs, come downstairs and then down to the cellar?

    P.S. I realised you were just coming up with an argument to fit the theory - that's all I was doing on the flip side.

    After John McSeveney was sacked, Johnny Steele took over as caretaker manager, until the club appointed Jim Iley. He then moved back to his role as General Manager, which he'd held prior to McSeveney's sacking.
    There is no perfect formula when it comes to selecting a successful manager. If there was, all clubs would utilise it.
