Everton had offered 2.2m for Stones

Everyone at the club had been raving about Stones for months

Bobby Hassell did a piece in the chron describing him as a rolls royce Ferdinand who had everything
Everyone that watched Barnsley games knew he was absolute quality getting better and better with every game
Most folk on here, me included, were saying he was a future England player
when there were rumours he was going to be sold I wasl saying he should have a 10m price tag on his head - and im no footy expert but it was obvious.
We didnt need the cash - the club is on an even keel - so keep him.

instead Cryne gets news of Evertons offer and says 'Who? John Stones? Whos he? Is he any good? what do you think? - DR- we might not get offered that again'

Jesus wept.

If this is to deflect the Wilson situation and current manager search job well done - but youve made yourself look negligent.

And then when i asked you about what Flicker said when you asked his comments he bumbled and reckoned Flicker said he was ok but not over bothered - or words to that effect. My head had gone at that point. I am pretty sure Flitcrofts comments at the time were not those - so that was a bare faced lie.

Negligence or ignorance? Which is it?

Bobby hassel:

"I knew from the moment I saw him at 15 he'd be going to the top. I think he'll prove to be one of the best centre halves the club has produced. He's very much in the mould of Rio Ferdinand. He's a fantastic player, and more importantly, a very grounded and humble lad. Got his head screwed on. A top guy. "

And April 2012 he did the article in the Chronicle about him.

Really, you think Pat Cryne a man bankrolling the club with his own money didn't want as much as he could?, if you are looking for a scapegoat I'd look elsewhere if I were you because believe me if the fans are feeling hard done by just think how the guy who has had to dig deeper into his own pockets to make up the shortfall feels.
Absolutely beggar belief how many on here keep having a go at a guy who is keeping the club going so that we actually have something to watch!!!!!!!!!!!

Flitcroft 'hes pretty average' ???

Flitcroft feels the Toffees have landed the most promising defender in the country and concedes there is no chance of him finding a replacement of similar quality.

He said: "On Wednesday, I was pretty confident we would keep John.

"But then I got a call on Thursday morning to say he would probably be leaving.

"To be honest, I am numb. It is like losing a member of your own family.

"I was asked if I could replace him, and the answer was, 'no'.

How do you replace the best young defender in England?

"There is nobody out there as good as John, and that is why clubs were prepared to pay £3million for him."

The whole meeting sounds like a joke and those running the club have come off looking VERY stupid. At least we've got Barry there though to make a few mistakes for us

As much as im annoyed and even after this shitstorm id still like PC to know that nobody loathes him - which he mentioned last night. I think everyone is grateful. But the losses we have suffered and the millions shortfall would not even be an issue if he had cared to take a proper interest in the club when Everton and Wigan came knocking.

Instead we have gone out of pocket now. I hope i never drop on Don Rowing or hes gonna get a rocket. Utterly clueless.

I am still speechless about the 'we didn't know how good John Stones was' quote. Gross incompetence.

Don't beat yourself up too much Omen - imagine the dross they'd have wasted the ...

.... extra £8 million on.

In my book we'd have been in an even worse state than we are now with underachieving high earners.

Shake the Don's hand rather than berate him - I'd take him back yesterday over the inexperienced ******** merchant we have now.

I agree with you on this. MOVE ON. Patrick didn't have to put his head on the block he took advice off others and to be honest but he has stumped up own money so I think people are being a bit too critical of him. How much was he involved whilst he was ill? Was Ben around then?
We are all back seat lawyers and quick to criticise when we don't know all the facts.

Some people conveniently forget what Flitcroft said to justify there dislike of the man.I also recall John thanking Hill and Flicker for there imput in his career.

Agreed. I can recall at least one interview with Flitcroft where he was waxing lyrical about John Stones. If he didn't rate him, why name the gym after him?

My thoughts too. Pat has done a job for us that nobody else would have. He admits himself, he is not a football man, but a football fan. He doesn't know about the running of a football club, obviously learning all the time. That is why he's had faith in people like Don, Ben etc, even if misplaced. I think the time Stonesy was sold, Pat was really ill, and obviously had other (legal) issues at the time. If he did put the blame on Flicker then that is obviously pretty low, considering what Flicker's comments were at the time to the media.

We got shafted and I would hope lessons have been learnt so a similar scenario didn't occur with any other potential star.

The information could have been withheld but credit to them for being honest and upfront about it.

Better late than never.

You never know , the sell on clause may be very beneficial to us at some point in the future, but then again knowing us we may get a pittance.

Makes me wonder how far the financial naïvity goes in the club, next time you're trying to buy a match day ticket offer them £5 on the off chance they don't see the value of it

Even Hill in the article below that said he was a player that could go all the way.
