It would seem to make sense in terms of the clubs plans for continuity etc if they are insisting that burton is no.2

Adkins would be an outstanding appointment. I'd be shocked if we could get him but stranger things have happened.

I could see them giving him a tempting deal till end of season, if he was willing to work with Burton.

Where is he likely to go in the meantime & if he did leave in that time we may get compo.

Both parties could review from there, but they could learn a lot for his insight, whether he stayed or goes.

    What's in it for him?

    1. Job till end of the season
    2. Flexibility to arrange pre contract with another club for next season
    3. If we have some fine players that he thinks he can turn into promotion hopefuls next season, a demonstration he can turn around a failing club, which is what he'll be asked to do elsewhere.

    What's against?

On a cracking compo deal from Reading till end of season?

That doesn't put him in shop window for a job next season, sat on his Harris. If we can pay him half of what he's on from the compo he will be tempted, for reasons already given.

I wouldn't mind Adkins. But I'd prefer us to appoint a manager and let him get on with the job himself, not forcing assistants onto him. If he wants an assistant, let him appoint one himself.

I dont think he is above us he took scunny to championship fromleague two and had them mid table championship too. Got saints to prem but inherited some top players from there accademy. Fizzled out abit at reading but will want to get back in management and work his way back up if we got him for next season would be a big statement and put bums on seats mine for one.

I'd generally agree, but given our policy with "youth & continuity", it makes good sense. Need someone who has seen the youngsters thus far in their careers.

PS, A really decent manager listens to others, but then makes his own decision. The point is, he needs someone to listen to.
Someone who has worked with the youth would be perfect. He may not listen too much to Youth Team Coach, as it's in his remit to get players into the first team, so may be a bit biased in his praise..

Maybe not, but I'd be attempting it, on the basis I said. Pretty sure he wouldn't do one year rolling contract, even if it had a bunch of get out clauses.

(Separate thought, who the **** are our lawyers working on these contracts. They should be briefing on the implications of what is being signed, as well as drawing the contracts).

I don't believe for a second that Adkins would be interested in us. If he was i'd hate to think he'd actually need a second interview to try and presuade our board to take him. I also think it's funny that we'd have such a good manager interested in us and be able to force Burton on him. The thought of Ben and Barry asking Nigel Adkins questions like what are your strengths, what can you bring to the role etc is hillarious. If he ever was interested in would be a case of showing him around the ground and getting straight down to his contract details.

IF and that's a big if, he has been down and for two interviews then its us saying what we can offer and then Adkins coming back to tell us his way.
Quite right mate people like Adkins don't come with cv's and trying their best to win us over. Ben, I do believe will be better than most at selling the club. Whether we have the money and recourses to mirror his remains to be seen.
At least we are now talking about proper candidates tho, would love him or Rosler.

Adkins would be a great appointment. Experience of managing under pressure at the top level, and at our level with resources similar to ours, gets his teams playing good football, and seems to be a thoroughly genuine bloke. Would be a coup though like some say.

Yet for me, Burton has being doing such a good job as academy coach, that I wouldn't want to take him away from that. He deserves to have an important role at the club, but I'd not want to break the continuity with what has been a successful production line of young players over the last few years. As he seems to be finding out, there's quite a difference between coaching and developing young footballers and organising a team of men to win football matches. He's excelled at the former, so let him carry on with it.
