Okay, who was there when he let 9 goals in at Oakwell, cos I remember it. And Mick Clarke hit the crossbar in the last minute, which could have made it ten.
Well if he gets the job I might ask him about it. As I remember it was only 3-0 at half time and then the Reds went rampant.
Reserves against Wigan, probably 87-88. About 200 of us there, but like Woodstock, 1000s will claim to have been in attendance if he signs on as manager...
That's the one. Crazy second half. The average age of the fans at reserve matches always used to be a couple of decades higher than it was for first team matches, but even the old boys were getting excited as the goals were flying in. There was a real sense of disappointment when the whistle went, cos another goal wouldn't have been far away. So is this the BFC version of the Sex Pistols at the Free Trade Hall? I was at Oakwell that night, along with Pete Shelley, Anthony H Wilson and Mick Hucknall!
I was there - seriously. Went to most reserve games before I went to college in 88 - just used the West Stand. Might have the team sheet with my programs somewhere
Going to the reserve matches in those days was great fun. Pre-internet, mobile phones, etc, so if a game got called off the first you knew about it was when you traipsed over the hill into darkness. I have all the team sheets from the reserve games in the mid-80s till I moved to Liverpool in 88. I look through them occasionally and I'm surprised at some of the players who played, either well known players on their way down or young players on their way up. There are also players who were at Oakwell for a couple of years who were solid reserve players, but who never really graced the first team, like Darren Rolph. In fact, going back to the sixties, Spud Murphy played for the reserves for a good few years before breaking through to the first team, so imagine how many appearances he'd have clocked up if he had got into the first team at the same age as someone like James Bree.
