I think Bassett was a good catch at the time to be honest, the club did have vastly different aspirations back then though I suppose.
are we just talking about managers here... because I do recall some very tangible euphoria when Peter Ridsdale came to town
Re: are we just talking about managers here... We all thought Spackman and Hart where going to be inspiring
It didn't work out but as I recall Spackman was the overwhelming choice of fans and there was excitement around Oakwell when he got the job. Just shows we know nowt.
Re: Think it out fella It was only Danny's standing that persuaded me (and I suspect, others) to sign back on for this season. Taking a chance on a rookie now is not the way to go. I think the club will pay in the Summer if they appoint the likes of Hignett, Johnson or Burton. The club needs a lift, and for my money it's gonna need a Rosler/PDC/Adkins type appointment to keep the interest (and faith) of the customer base up - even if they come with risks. The time to hesitate is through. No time to wallow in the mire.
Hardly surprising is it. If I was thinking about applying for a new job I don't think I'd be going for one where nobody in the past 16(?) years has actually gone on to better things afterwards. Or one where I knew I probably wouldn't be there a year later. At the end of the day I'm not sure why everyone's surprised over how long it's taking or the calibre of people we're apparently after. Why would any decent manager apply? And anybody who does should rightly spend a long time trying to negotiate in order to ensure the same things don't happen again.
Bassett at the time was about as close to cert as we could have got. Not sure it was inspiring, but it was good appointment.
