    Trying to find out what this bird is that was in our garden yesterday..about size of a collared dove or similar.

    Quails are summer migrants, usually arrive at the end of April/start of May are they're pretty rare so I'd be fairly surprised if it was one.

    The illustration on wiki is of a bird in pristine breeding plumage, in less than perfect light it's really hard to say for certain the exact colour of any part and they can certainly look darker. The photo is a RLP mate, trust me I've seen over 4,000 species of birds worldwide.
