Oldham had been keen to offer Evans a return to the sport but, following a backlash by sponsors and death threats made against officials at Boundary Park, the League One side decided to pull the plug on any deal. Rape is bad. Death threats are acceptable. FFS
Only one of the two happened. No one from Oldham rang the police about the death threats, so, on hearing the news story, Greater Manchester Police proactively contacted Oldham Athletic, who stated no death threats had been made, just 'mild abuse' on Twitter.
But did any death threats actually get reported to the police? I know that spokesmen for the club reported them to the papers, but I recall seeing a statement from Greater Manchester Police that said than none had actually been reported to them. I just saw it as a convenient get out clause for them when they realised the amount of opposition from their supporters and sponsors, unless the police have now received complaints of course.
