Evening Tykes, Pne fan here who will be visiting Barnsley next week for our game and also (hopefully) a few scoops of good Yorkshire ale. We are travelling by train and will be arriving in town around midday. I've had a brief look on google and a The Gate House seems rather nice and you're also 'blessed' with two Wetherspoons. So where would people recommend we go for some good real ale and a decent atmosphere? Cheers.
Well, the Gate House is okay if you like fish and chips, but all you'll get to drink is dandelion and burdock, as it hasn't been a pub for a few years. If you like real ale go to the No. 7 on Market Hill. Providing you're not all singing, there should be no problem with you being in your PNE shirts in there, which I couldn't say about every pub in town. Great pub, but doesn't do food, apart from pork pies. But there's a chippy right outside the station (the one where the Gatehouse used to be), so have them on the way to the pub. And be prepared to hear how we're not very fond of Scott Wiseman. Apparently he wasn't very fond of us either!
As the above poster said, your best pub for real ale is old number 7 on market hill.At the bottom of market hill there is also Joseph Bramahs which is one of the Wetherspoons.
Metrodome... you might struggle otherwise Majority of pubs now we are 'doing well' will have home fans only signs up. Expect heavy mostly unfreindly policing. Especially of they've seen some of you tube videos. . ..
Thanks guys. We won't be wearing colours but if the door staff are savy enough we may struggle which I hope isn't the case as we are real ale drinking 30 somethings not troublemakers. Thank you to Barnsley CAMRA for their great write up of The Gatehouse which failed to mention it had closed some time ago. Think we'll aim for No 7, one of the Wetherspoons and perhaps The Dove which looks a decent place. Ta everyone. PS we won't mention Scott Wiseman and it's unlikely he'll be playing as we seem to favouring Ex Huddersfield utility defender Tom Clarke at right back
Just avoid the chambers, chennells, the groggers and you should be fine. Walkabout, weatherspoons, dove, number 7 and metrodome are usually away fan friendly. Best advice is just to be cautious when walking to the ground near the underpass... its usually policed pretty well but when it has 'kicked off' it's usually been around there.
You should be ok in town, if you start giving **** out you're likely to get plenty back keep your head down and you'll be reyt.
The Dove Inn on Doncaster road is away fan friendly and is only a short walk from the ground. Other than that the pubs mentioned above are good.
Don't go shouting your mouth off and you'll be fine everywhere. As others have mentioned, No 7, The Dove or Wetherspoons will suit you. Personally I'd recommend No 7. It's the Acorn Brewery Pub, brewers local to Barnsley. Acorn Blonde is £2.50 a pint and it's gorgeous. They've also got an IPA on, Barnsley Bitter and Barnsley Gold, plus umpteen guest ales, porters, bitters and ciders, and hundreds of bottles from all over the world. Lager is Yorkshire or Freedom. Get a pork, dripping and stuffing sandwich from Charlsworths on the way to the ground (£1.40). Hope you have a good day, apart from the result, obviously.
Ha ha, we're not ones to shout our mouths off, too busy drinking! Thanks for the description of No.7, it sounds a very decent boozer indeed and having sampled a few Barnsley beers in the past we'll definitely be heading there and then The Dove methinks. Via Charlesworths of course, not missing the chance of a pork and dripping butty! Thanks everyone for your help, have a good day.
Like every place in the country, you only get trouble if you're looking for it. Barnsley isn't a particularly bad place. I suppose Market Hill is the place to hit as suggested by most of the above. 7 or 8 pubs to go at. And as above, pop to charlsworths on the way down to the ground, probably your last chance seen as it's closing. Hope you have a good afternoon barring the match.
The 2 Wetherspoons are ok. Also the No 7, a good real ale pub, which is 50 yards up Market Hill from the Joseph Bramah Wetherspoons. Avoid the Groggers Rest next to the bus station unless it's been bulldozed by now in which case dance on the rubble. The Metrodome sports centre 200 yards from the away end used to be an away fans' bar. It may still be.
Channels is ok, cheap beer, Sky and Bt Sports. Been in a few times when away fans have been in and not seen any trouble. Indeed, when Wigan came last year there were a few of their knobheads singing and banging on the doors and they were just ignored.
Walked past Charlsworths today and was shut so not sure if its just Monday it shuts or its shut altogether... Same with Groggers
