Yes.........old sport played in the Dearne Valley.........but never played it mi sen My favourite as a kid was always .........cheeky
Is it still going? saw it as a young un once, but never played it. These things are our heritage and need to continue.
Plus Nurr and spell I played nipsey as a kid. We used to make our nipseys from wood and the sticks http://www.ml014c5457.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/nipsypersonal.html
Best player around Barnsley was Nipsy Beedan from Brampton Nipsy was made from snooker balls and stick from shunters poles
when we were kids we played a version with a brick a small pointed piece of wood and (I think) a pick axe handle
That's it. The small piece of wood woud balance on the brick and you would hit it down so it spun upwards. Then you would t**t it as hard as you could in mid air. Farthest, judged by a stride out, won.
Remember it being played on Mellers Field, off Donny Road when I was a kid (late 50's). Used to attract some large crowds.
Never heard of it. It sounds like a euphemism for arsehole. "I tell you what Doris, that vindaloo seemed a good idea after 12 pints but my nipsey isn't half regretting it now"
Was still played on the field behind the priory pub at Cundy cross until the early 90's, I had a go as a nipper, Shame it died out
Very good on you to post this Takes me back to when I was a lad when I used to watch them. I am 75 now and that gives you some idea of when it was played. Wonder wether it will ever come back? Why not
Knurr & spell. Same principle. I remember them playing it down Broomhill (wombwell ) when i was a lad in the fifties. The main difference seemed to be that in nipsy they used a house brick set at a angle to stand the nipsey on.
