Make it much much worse. You couldn't make it up. I thought at least the lessons of destroying your public housing stock had been learned. Obviously not.

Or we could go back to building affordable and sustainable housing. And have a landlord tax.

And CPO land from wealthy landowners and corporations who sit on brownfield sites (that they often polluted necessitating significant remediation) because they have overinflated land value expectations and are rich enough to sit on it for years and years.

Or they could just give everyone free housing, wouldn't that be nice! Also wouldn't it be nice just for once to admit the party you don't happen to support have some good ideas. Pissas me off that every time in PM question time, the opposition (whoever that may be) think it necessary to slag every idea off as rubbish when in reality chances suggest that there must be some good policies in there, but they will be burnt in hell to admit it. A bunch of wallies most of which I wouldn't employ in a million years. Negative energy has no business in business, and running the country is a business. Can't stand ******** politics like that.

Housing benefit is forecasted to be £30 billion A YEAR by 2018/19. Up from about £2 billion per annum pre-Right To Buy.

If I was running a business I wouldn't sell off my assets, which generate income, for significantly less than they're worth whilst then paying other people to provide that service for me at a huge loss.

Don't understand that at all. And who forecasts a rise from 2 to 30 in 3 years? That's just fantasy IMO. Also why would council houses be classed as an asset? Probably costs more to maintain than the capital investment, if in fact it can be classed as an investment. Not an asset but a means of people to get a roof over their heads who couldn't otherwise afford or choose to have a mortgage. It's not a crime for people to live in council houses, it's a right.

My original post was more that looking at the posts here and also seeing the muppets in PM question time it appears to me that whatever the government does, it's a total stupid mistake that must be criticised otherwise it's considered political treason. What I would like to see is something like "we like your policies on housing, but don't agree with your policies on the NHS" but it's not going to happen. No one can get things wrong all the time, so let's admit it.

The Right to Buy was introduced as part of the 1980 Housing Act, and local authorities housing revenue account's are one of the few areas of government that return surpluses, so council housing isn't costing more to maintain than to manage. The current discount has been recently increased to up to £75,000 from the properties value, the receipts from which are not sufficient to reprovide a new house, and if not spent within 3 years are returned to central government with interest payable.

Over 1.5m social rented homes have been lost from the public housing stock under the Right to Buy, whilst fuelling house prices and consequently increasing the demand on the reduced social housing stock. In London alone a third of Right to Buy homes are now owned by private landlords who the council pay to house tenants through housing benefit.

Cameron has announced that now housing association tenants will be able to access the Right to Buy, bizarrely funded by the housing association receiving the full market value for the property whilst local authorities have to sell their own stock off to pay for it.

This isn't in any way a business decision, or a good policy decision which deals with the housing crisis. Its David Cameron trying to win votes by invoking the ghost of Margaret Thatcher.

the right to buy should never have been incarnated in the first place,a tory idea to win votes and raise money in the very short term..you'd think labour would do something about it.

My post wasn't about housing inparticular, it was about the ******** negative reaction to anything the other party says. It's like don't say anything because if you say the sun will rise tomorrow I'll dispute it as a lie. And these are the leaders of the country? Please...

I actually work as a researcher did some work for the conservatives last year on housing strategy. The selling off of council housing was a disastrous policy in terms of government financing. It has been an unmitigated disaster for the benefit system dramatically increasing state support. Any independent research will telll you that. The new policy may in the short term benefit individuals but in the long term adds to the housing crisis

Thanks - I'm really looking forwards to the negative equity for millions that this will create and the subsequent stagnation of the economy that follows.

I'll never understand why council houses were sold off - other than to remove the supply of cheap rented housing - stitch workers up with a mortgage that then makes sure they can't risk a strike.

One of my old bosses would only ever employ married men with mortgages - "nowt like a wife needing the house keeping and mortgage payment on the first of the month to get a bloke out of bed for some overtime on a Setdi" was his motto.
