As most of you will know they get dressed up for the final away game

They are planning on dressing up as Bob Marley

    But

If they paint their faces black they will be refused entry to the stadium

What a joke this county is

    PC gone mad

Where have you read that? Kick It Out have advised Carlisle to refuse entry to Hartlepool fans who 'black-up' but there has been no such decision.

I hate racism as much as anyone but I will never understand why a white person painting their face black as part of fancy dress is considered racist by idiots at all. If I am going in fancy dress as ozzy osbourne I would wear a long black wig. If I was going as David beckham (or hundreds of other celebs) I'd have fake tattoos drawn on. If I was going as Davis Dickinson I'd get the orange face paint out. If I'm going as somebody who happens to be black then it stands to reason that I will make myself look black or I wouldn't look anything like them.

Is it racist to make myself look like someone when doing fancy dress or is it racist to tell me I can't do fancy dress of certain people because I am white?

So they won't be refusing them entry then. And it's up for discussion because you brought it to the BBS.

Kick It Out are an anti-discrimination organisation. Unsurprisingly, it is issues of a racial nature that they speak out on. They've spoken up on this because they've received complaints from Hartlepool fans. Kick It Out won't always get everything right. Not everything they say will be acted upon. There is a counter argument, which is being aired, which, to me, proves that this country isn't in a situation where political correctness has gone mad, but is able to respond to issues on a case by case basis and discuss what is at hand without saying it's all bonkers.

To be fair that would be a **** costume. Everyone knows the sheet goes over your head with just ancoupleof eye holes so no need to paint your face. Bloody amateur.

Because we have a history of white performers blacking up to ridicule people of different races in order to entertain a white audience. If we lived in a bubble, then all you've said is right, but we don't, we have the weight of history on our shoulders.

As no one is being refused entry and as the issue has nothing to do with dressing up, I'm struggling for an answer.

What if a bee ate a nuclear bomb, dived in to a plate of jelly and sang Tom, Tom the Piper's Son?

Personally I think it is worse that white people are banned (essentially even if not legally) from doing something that has no I'll intentions because of the actions of a past generation.
Posh southern actors used to (and still do) put on **** northern accents to ridicule us northern poor people but nobody would dream of banning rich folk from playing commoners in films.

I just think there is clearly different intentions when people do things and it is incredibly small minded to assume that every person doing something similar (but clearly different) has the same intentions. If anyone thinks that me dressing as bob Marley is in any way similar to Jim Davidson doing a chalky white routine then they're either thick or just looking for bad intentions where there is none. At times I feel that kick it out are doing the latter and I feel it undermines the real purpose of the organisation

No one has said anything about dressing up, it's about blacking up, ie their face.

    Read this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blackface
"Stereotyped blackface characters developed: buffoonish, lazy, superstitious, cowardly, and lascivious characters, who stole, lied pathologically, and mangled the English language. Early blackface minstrels were all male, so cross-dressing white men also played black women who were often portrayed either as unappealingly and grotesquely mannish; in the matronly, mammy mold; or highly sexually provocative."

No one is claiming that anyone who does black up has the same ideals as those who did it in the past. They're saying that because of the way it was used in the past, it's inappropriate.

If someone dresses in a Nazi uniform for a fancy dress party, it's not because they want to kill all the Jews, but many people find it inappropriate.

What a sad state of affairs that something like this is even getting discussed. Kick it out aren't doing themselves any favours by taking this stupid politically correct attitude.

The Black & White Minstrels, Al Jolson....really

I do not think either of them blacked up to ridicule... they were all serious and very good performers.

I can understand your point Jay if people are just blacking up. But when it's part of an attempt to dress as Bob Marley (an idol of loads of white people, so plenty of respect) I think it's a little silly for offence to be taken.
