They have been told by the council that as the race does not come through town until 12:45 it will not affect those going to the game.

I assume everyone is getting to Oakwell for 7am then.

 

What time do the road closures commence?

 

Just been looking at the route, past Asda up Eldon Street, up Regent St, reyt at town hall and take a left up the side of Huddersfield Rd college, past Dickie statue and down Hudders Rd.

 

Road signs for Wakefield Road say that there will be disruption from 10am until 2 pm.

 

Do council know it's not a 15-00 kick off they might think they're giving 2 hours to kick off

 

Roads are closed prior to race passing through but pedestrian barriers will be in place long before May make it difficult getting to ground through town centre or just maybe a lot easier than we anticipated just need to give yourself more time

 

The town doesn't deserve to host the race next year as the organisation has been an absolute shambles with virtually no information given out about road closures. The best information I can find is a short list of roads that will be closed at some point. Where is the information on exactly when? Where is the information on diversions? Where is the information for football fans?

Completely agree. We've had signs up at the top of my road for about 4 weeks. I'm informed to expect disruptions between 10 am and 4pm and to plan my journey.

 

I've been to a coupe of tour of britain stages over the last few years when its been on Dartmoor and they never actually closed the roads until just before the race got to a certain area. I think that they refer to it as a rolling roadblock. Essentially they divert any traffic off the road as the race approaches and hold it at junctions until all bikes have passed. Not saying that this is the way they'll do it at the weekend, but may not be done quite the same as the TDF.

 

Not just Barnsley. Same situation in Wakey. Plenty of flashing signs warning of disruption but nothing on when and where.

Causes me problems getting to the game and I normally walk!

My missus is away in the States visiting family this week, she's due back at Manchester airport at 11am. My mates missus was going to pick her up so I could go to the game, but they live off Huddersfield road so that's them screwed getting out of the estate.
Fortunately I live M1 side of town so should be ok.

 

Will this affect trains into Barnsley, and pub opening times?

All I'm bothered about.

I think there is a lot of over reaction on here re the race and road closures, as Cornwall T says re the tour of Britain they give plenty of advance warning re potential congestion, road closures etc...as you say boards been out for a while now..... but they only close the road the race is passing over a few minuites prior to the race reaching any particular point, as he says they use the rolling roadblock format, this race is nowhere near as big an issue as the TDF, I guess it is ..at the very most..on a parr with the Tour of Britain and tbh I have been watching that race for years and never had any issues, you can usually get to see it at 2 or 3 points on the route......as for the comments re Barnsley hosting the race....it isn't, the race is merely passing through.........I really cant see it having any effect whatsoever on persons getting to Oakwell for the game...I could be wrong of course.......

 

It involves barnsley council. They struggle to run a bath at the best of times.

 

I'm surprised you think that. Even if the road closures don't affect those travelling to the game, what about the number of people travelling in to Barnsley to watch the race? The TDF coming to Yorkshire last year sparked unprecedented interest. The reason we've got this race is because of that interest. Obviously, we're not going to see the same numbers as we saw for TDF, but a lot of people are still going to be watching. Bradley Wiggins is riding, a bloke who has transcended the sport and become a personality away from the bike. He's a big draw.

Those travelling to Barnsley to watch the race and those travelling to see the game will be arriving about the same time. Eldon Street, Regent Street and Church Street will be closed from 10:00 am. Although they haven't said so, this effectively closes Shambles Street too, as you can't use that road without hitting one of the closed roads. What they really should have said is that all the roads in Barnsley town centre are closed. All the extra traffic from those coming to Barnsley for the race on top of match day traffic and the town centre roads will be closed. If you use Huddersfield Road, your route in is blocked. Down Summer Lane then. Good luck to everyone doing that. There's going to be congestion. A lot of it.

Will County Way car park be closed? There's obviously no access to it from Regent Street and depending on how much of Church Street is closed, there may be no access from the top of Old Mill Lane. If our biggest town centre car park is closed or there is no access for those arriving from the north west, where is everyone going to park?

I really don't think they've thought this through.
