Sadly the facts are that 5% of the population hold 90% of the wealth, there is an unemployment rate of 40% and if you want to do business there you better be prepared to dig deep in your pocket because bribes are expected. It's the same in all southern and central Africa countries. You see what your friend has not taken into consideration is the tribal system where tribes such as the Zulz and Xhosa (Mandelas tribe) consider themselves far superior to the rest and its expected that gifts be bestowed upon them, this is normal there. Back to the rape of the country, post apartheid the French sold them a squadron of fighter planes; something they needed like a boil, but there were millions paid to the South Africans in bribes. Just one example and there are many more. This is Africa post colonial, today's Africa. Angola has minerals in abundance, diamonds, oil and many more yet the vast majority of the population live in poverty, Congo is worse, I've been there seen it and was ashamed, but what can you do except to try to uplift them by creating jobs and improving infrastructure , building schools and clinics, at least this gives something to the community.

    Hey up Ian

He can't say any different tbh otherwise he will be abandoning the labour candidates fighting seats against the SNP and declaring defeat before the battle so to speak.
There'll be no pleasing the SNP politicians whoever gets in simply because if they help a govt to become popular it takes support from them be it labour or otherwise, don't forget they are po!iticians and saying another party is doing OK is not done.

The left is divided labour ,the greens,SNP,and some lib\dems are all fighting for the same voting pool and that is what the Tories are counting ,on its the only way they can win and when they do the left parties will be blaming each other and in fact their all to blame.

The SNP like UkIP have a major goal and is better aired in unaccountable opposition than responsible governance where their words are put to the test.
As I said before a Tory govt suits the SNP agenda to rally the voters and move them to their goal of independence. Which is fair enough for the people who want it but puts in an unpopular govt for the majority of the country and the division will be harder to heal.

The blame will no doubt be thrown from one to the other but IMO its the left as a whole who suffers.i

How will it be an unpopular government if the majority votes for them? And don't rule out the SNP supporting any majority government if they promise another referendum. Politition are fickle.

They may have more seats but but not as many voters .the SNP will not support a Tory govt full stop, they will lose all their support.

Then neither Labour or Conservative will be a popular government with that logic as neither will get 51% of the votes. You think Sturgeon will pass up another chance at independence? I think not, she will sleep with the devil to get what she wants. never trust a lawyer or a politition.

The Scots as a nation were divided over the Independence election. There was a lot of bad blood between folk over it.

Nicola has done a wonderful job in pulling everyone together for this election in declaring that the vote for SNP is not for Independence, but for a more powerful Scottish voice in Westminster.

There at last seems to be some unity here with everyone pulling in the same direction. Even far left politicians such as Tommy Sheridan asking folk to vote SNP for a greater Scottish voice.

Not really the Tories received 30% + of the total vote the rest voted for left leaning parties who all hate the Tories.

It's unbelievable how many people are voting SNP up here. Even people who voted 'No' in the referendum. And also people who have also stated that they would vote no in the next referendum. So they are voting to make a party more powerful even though they don't agree with the basic principal of why that party exists. Mental.

Says everything of what the Scottish people think of how things are being run in this country.

You must see and hear all the discontent even in Edinburgh which is TBH little England.

Not really Ian. To be honest the vast majority of people I know in Edinburgh don't want Scotland to split from the UK. My point earlier is that a lot of these people are voting SNP in this election.

TBH Almost everyone I know and meet is pro independence. Hardly surprising really when you consider that Dundee was 1 of only 3 regions to give a Yes majority.
As for all those intending to vote SNP in this election is possibly down to Nicola and the way she has endeared herself to the electorate and not looked down on them as some do. I do believe that she is trusted and people here believe in her to do the best for Scotland. Nothing whatever to do with Independence just wants to make Scotlands voice heard and people are liking what they hear.

As an Englishman (I think) what is your take on the woman. You see the coverage see gets here more than the other posters on this board. Don't you just feel that she is bringing a good bit of trust and honesty into this election. Compare that to the pathetic efforts of Jim Murphy.

I have to say I'm surprised the Scots are now playing the boo hoo we didn't get everything that we were promised card. It's the real world if Salmond had won the vote he wouldn't have delivered everything he promised. No one has fooled anyone in any contest you put forward your best intentions. Reality often doesn't live up to that.

I am English Ian but I have lived in Edinburgh for 25 years. Married an Edinburgh woman and now have 3 kids born here. My in-laws are pro the union and very anti SNP. Interestingly my wife's auntie and cousins are all from Dundee and are all SNP supporters. I am incredibly proud of my Barnsley roots, love Yorkshire, support all things England but see myself as British. In my view we are stronger together. I run my own business and whilst it is a small business I do mix with some heavyweight business leaders in Scotland and none of them want Scotland to be independent. I don't like Nicola. But I can see why many people have taken to her. The fact that she replaced Salmond has been a huge factor in the rise in support for the SNP. I think Polorics in the UK is now in a real mess. I think we should only be able to vote for political parties that are present in every part of the UK. ie: National parties in the truest sense. That way things would be a lot easier. Maybe Nicola should rebrand the SNP and make it a UK wide party.

I think she's great. Really nice lass. Don't know nearly enough about SNP's policies to comment on those, but she's a great leader. Not surprised at all the SNP vote has rocketed with her in charge.

Exactly a vote for SNP in the General Election is a vote to put the Tories in power and keep Labour out. It says alot about about a party thats being backed by the The Sun in Scotland.....Murdochs revenge on the UK starts with the SNP

    Absolute nonsense.

A vote for the SNP is what it is. A vote to put SNP MP's into Parliament.

The fact that Labour can't summon up enough MP's in England would be why the Tories might be the dominant party in England. Why blame us?

As for the Sun. Only last week they ran 2 different editions on the same story. The Scottish supported the SNP and the English murdered them. Twisted press to twits the minds of people like you who will believe it.

Do yourself a favour mate, don't buy or read it. Surely you are not one of the zombies who believe all that is in the sun is fact.

The reason The Sun did that was to try to ensure Labour don't win and The Conservatives do. In England that's easy, they just urge people to vote for the Tories. Not so simple in Scotland as the Tories have no chance whatever The Sun say. However, Labour still do have a fighting chance of winning seats in Scotland and if they do they'll have more chance of winning this election. So The Sun urge Scottish people to vote SNP, not because they believe in any of their policies, they probably hate the SNP even more than Labour, but every seat the SNP win is one less for Labour and one better for the Conservatives.

Durkar and I are not that well acquainted, but I can tell you for a fact he's not a Sun reader. He's merely pointing out that some Scottish voters will be swayed by what The Sun say and a vote for the SNP does help the Tories retain power. That's not a reason not to vote for them, if you're for independence and against Trident, they're the right party for you, but that isn't the case for a lot of people voting SNP. They're traditional Labour supporters using it as a protest vote because they feel ignored by a party who should be representing them. That and the fact that Nicola Sturgeon seems like a great lass. But a vote for the SNP is far more likely to get us all the government that we really don't want.

Jay once again i bow to your superior knowledge of all things political. I am now beginning to understand things from an English/Labour prospective but TBH like most people I will only want to vote on things which I feel has the greater effect on my and families lives. So for me and many others a vote for SNP will do more good than harm for me as an individual. Labour has failed so many and now they are paying for the taking for granted the Labour vote here in Scotland.

I was not trying to put Durkar down just wanting to point out that the press you read in England is a different press we read here. Different but both ***** and only a fool would buy and digest it.
