He did, something widely ridiculed after he had said years earlier Gerrard was the most influential player in England and had tried to sign him at least twice. I wonder who would have been dropped for him???

Re: in a bbc best central midfielder poll.....Stevie Gerrard

As good as Gerrard is, I think I'm inclined to agree with these lot.....

“My toughest opponent? Scholes of Manchester. He is the complete midfielder.” Zinedine Zidane

“I’m not the best, Paul Scholes is.” Edgar Davids

“Out of everyone at Manchester United, I would pick out Scholes – he is the best midfielder of his generation. I would have loved to have played alongside him.” Pep Guardiola

I tell anyone who asks me – Scholes is the best English player.” Laurent Blanc

“The player in the Premiership I admire most? Easy – Scholes.” Patrick Vieira

“He is the one whose level I aspire to. He is the best player in the Premier League.” Cesc Fabregas

“In the last 15 to 20 years the best central midfielder that I have seen — the most complete — is Scholes. I have spoken with Xabi Alonso about this many times. Scholes is a spectacular player who has everything. He can play the final pass, he can score, he is strong, he never gets knocked off the ball and he doesn’t give possession away. If he had been Spanish then maybe he would have been valued more.” Xavi

Thats my point though, Gerrard could have sat infront of the back four dictating games all his career, he had just as good, if not better passing range than Scholes, alonso, xavi, pirlo but he also had the ability to impact games with telling contributions further up the field, being able to strangle games when it really mattered and that is what sets him apart from the rest. I dare say you could merge Lampard, Scholes and Vieira into one player and the result would be somewhere close to Gerrard.

“He has become the most influential player in England, bar none. Not that Vieira lacks anything, but Gerrard does more.” – Sir Alex Ferguson

“I can’t think of a striker in the world who has scored so many important goals, never mind a midfielder.” – Thierry Henry

“I love Gerrard’s qualities as a player and a leader. Technically and tactically he is the best.” – Gus Hiddink

“I am a huge fan of Steven Gerrard, He has the heart of a lion. He is a player I would like to have in my team.” – Kaka

“I have never seen such a complete midfielder.” – Claudio Marchisio

“For the job he performs, he is one of the greatest.” – Ronaldinho

Steven Gerrard is the best player I’ve ever played with.” – Luis Suarez

“He is without soubt the greatest player I have ever played with, he has everything. At Liverpool, he is irreplaceable.” – Fernando Torres

Steven Gerrard would be the captain of my World XI dream team.” – Francesco Totti

“I heard what Alex Ferguson said about him being better than me. He’s probably right.” – Patrick Vieira

“Is he the best in the world? He might not get the attention of Messi and Ronaldo but yes, I think he just might be.” – Zinedine Zidane

Ar but the biggest story about Stevie G is yet to come out. Apparantly.

    Yep!

Raved about him for years, tried to sign him, he kept saying no & then Fergie been his usual bitter self despite decided he wasn't a 'top, top player'.

Makes you wonder why he was willing to spend a fortune on someone who wasn't a 'top, top player' when he had Scholes & Keane already

The problem is that most people hate either Liverpool or Man United even most people from Barnsley seem to have one of the two as a second team and despise the other & this makes them unable to make a fair judgement on Gerrard & Scholes.

As a neutral they're the best 2 English players of my lifetime.

I edge slightly towards Gerrard just because of his leadership qualities and the amount of times he dragged his team out of the **** especially the champions league but both are brilliant.

It's a shame that so many try to put one or the other down.

You only have to look at the quotes above to know how good these two were.

I can't think of any other English players who've come anywhere close to putting in the sorts of performances Gerrard & Scholes did in the champions league consistently against some quality opposition.

I don't like/dislike either club. I have no agenda against either. I prefer Scholes. And that is by no means a put down on Gerrard, just my opinion. And I do think Dalglish was better than em both.

I actually much prefer Man Utd, I cant stand Liverpool but Scholes shouldnt even be mentioned alongside Gerrard, Lampard, Vieira etc. He was a good player, not outstanding.

If you don't you need more than a trip to specsaves. Dalglish was genuinely world class in his day and was a better player than Gerrard.

Are you old enough to have seen Dalglish's career?

It was Hartson who scored the first PL goal against us, not Lampard.

My old man says Dalglish was the only Liverpool player he'd have over Gerrard.

I always go with best of my lifetime cos I'd be a liar if I said I'd seen enough of players from that era to judge.

Annoys me when people in there 20's come out with statements like 'Messi / Ronaldo is the greatest of all time when they've never seen Maradona, Pele etc

I am, let me ask you a question. If Dalglish had been in the 2005 CL team instead of Gerrard would they have still won it? And I font just mean the final I'm talking about the whole run... The answer is no. Dalglish was a brilliant player but he played in some fantastic teams and so it was easier to look good.

The answer to that is, as you very well know, is very difficult to answer and is purely hypothetical. We are at the end of the day comparing different types of players as well, each with there own strengths & weaknesses. Also everyone is entitled to their own opinions and everyone will come up with different answers - that's what makes football great isn't it?
