We are still talking about Steven Gerrard aren't we? If he was the best in the world, at any point, the best Liverpool player ever etc, then why hasn't he led them to a title? He was close last season. Well, I say he was, but really I meant Suarez and Sturridge. Gerrard slipped and cost em the title. He did the same in Brazil and we were out of the World Cup. Yep, that Steven Gerrard.

I don't have Chelsea or Liverpool as a second team. It's a neutral opinion on both players, Gerrard and Lampard.

It's this notion that Liverpool have had ***** teams with ***** players during Gerrard's career that amuses me. They've had Alonso, Suarez, Owen, Hamman, Torres, Henchoz, Luis Garcia, Fowler, McManaman, Carragher, Hyypia... plenty of quality players. He's hardly been laiking for us has he?

He's been a terrific footballer, Gerrard. One of the best to come out of the country in the last 20 years, one of Europe's top midfielders and a legend at his club. But better than Scholes? Better than Lampard? Not in my opinion.

Better than Dalglish? Crazy talk. IMO obviously. More athletic but not as talented as a player.

Dalglish was my first idol as a young lad, until I saw Gazza.

English football was ace back then, hardly any foreigners, national team was decent too, and Barnsley were mid table at worst in the second division.

    Now ******* look.

That's incredibly harsh to say Gerrard cost them the title.

So despite them conceding a ridiculous amount of goals from a very dodgy back 4 & goalkeeper throughout last season you've decided to pick out one mistake by a player who time after time put away crucial penalties & free kicks & created goals & chances all season for Suarez & Sturridge as the moment that cost them the league.

A player who was 34 years old, at least 3 years past his best & due to the poor squad around him (in comparison to their rivals) never got a rest like Scholes & Lampard did later in their careers.

He didn't play with **** in his career but he played with **** compared to the Chelsea, Man Utd & Arsenal sides they were trying to compete with.

You only have to look at the Man Utd & Arsenal teams throughout the late 90's, the Chelsea team throughout the 00's & the City team in recent years to see why Liverpool didn't win anything during Gerrard's era. So much more quality in the first team and strength in depth than Liverpool had.

It didn't help that every time Liverpool had another quality player & started to build a top team they had to sell & start again (see Owen, Alonso, Torres, Mascherano, Suarez).

He led a team containing Finnan, Traore, Kewell, Garcia & Baros to champions league glory. The Milan team they beat that night: Dida, Cafu, Stam, Nesta, Maldini, Pirlo, Gattuso, Seedorf, Kaka, Crespo & Shevchenko. I think that says it all.

Carragher at the weekend admitted the team wouldn't have got anywhere near to challenging for a league title or winning the champions league without Gerrard. His words 'I owe most of my medals to him'.

Lampard's own cousin said Gerrard was a better player than Lampard.

    That'll do for me.

I agree completely. I'm merely saying that for me, Steven Gerrard is the best I've seen. I cant quite get my head around why noone in the England set up never realised he was our best player snd set the team up around him.

    All quality.

Lampard played most games and scored most goals. Best atacking midfielder.

Scholes has most honours and arguably most creative midfielder.

Gerrard combative and creative and aguably best all round midfielder.

If you could only have one of the above in your side it would bd Lampard for me. For his fitness and goals. Rarely injured, consistent performer, and goalscorer!

His own versatility counted against him.

Wanted to keep all the stars in the team, rather than have to drop one or two to have a better team.

At one point Gerrard & Lampard were two of the best attacking midfielders in Europe, Gerrard playing off Torres & in front of Alonso & Mascherano & Lampard between Drogba, Essien & Makelele but England decided they could play them both in the centre of a flat midfield 4 & then wonder why it didn't work.

Spot on. Talent isnt why we've failed in the last 15 years, its glassback managers that have been constantly employed. SGE being the biggest culprit. Someone like Carrick should have been played to anchor Gerrard and Lampard, dropped Owen and pushed Rooney further up but as you say, all big names got a game.
