Always thought he was from Silkstone Common (which was why he played for Barnsley Boys), but Wikipedia says he was from Chapeltown. http://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/shef...ld-united-legend-alan-woodward-dies-1-7273655
Remember him playing in goal v Leeds when Alan Hodgkinson was injured (no subs in those days). Played a blinder as Sheffield U won 1-0. RIP.
Aged 68. He looked about that old when he was playing. Confused me when I was a kid and got his card in my Topps 78 footy collection, as I couldn't understand why someone was still playing football yet looked older than my grandad. There were a few players at that time who looked far too old to still be playing football, Ralph Coates for example. And yet in reality they were 15 years younger than I am now. Yikes!
Ah, so both statements could be true. Cheers, mate. Whilst watching Barnsley in the '60's & '70's, Alan Woodward was one of a number of players from Barnsley & the surrounding areas who had slipped through the net (as it were), plying their trade at a higher level than our club at the time. As well as Woodward, there were also the like of Gordon West, Steve Daley, Mick Speight, Alan Sunderland, Jimmy & Brian Greenhoff. There were probably more, but their names now escape me.
I remember him coming to Wombwell High with Mickey Speight, they did a coaching session with the 1st XI. He could hit a mean volley, RIP.
Saw Woody play a few times when I was in my teens. He was great at taking corners, scored quite a few goals direct from a corner. He could be classes as one of the greatest players never to have won an England cap. Amazing I think !
They were from Silkstone common according to my missus, their mother was next-door neighbour to my father-in-law
id agree wi that... just played at a time when there was a hell of a lot of good players about. Had a shot every bit as good as Peter Lorimer. RIP...
Geoff Salmons from Mexborough who was in the same team was the guy who scored a few from corners. Both played in the same team as the most elegant, most beautiful to watch, player that I have ever seen - Tony Currie
Scored a cracking goal in Jock Steeles Testimonial. Must have been 30 yards out and hit it clean as a whistle. Alongside him that day was Peter Lorimer and the Great John Charles a true Collossus of a man.
I know that these days the Blades are the "Millwall" of South Yorkshire but back in the 60s and 70s they had some fantastic players, Alan Woodward being just one of them, and all right thinking football fans couldn't help but admire them. Both Sheffield clubs were First Division regulars at that time. Those of us who remember Ronnie Glavin wax lyrical about him, and quite rightly so, but imagine have someone like Tony Currie in your team! RIP Alan Woodward. Gone too soon.
This is my 3rd attempt to add to this thread if this one don't work then I'm on mi bike. New Alan very well played with him in a youth club team (he always played in goal) new his dad Roy worked at The Levey Tag, he also died young, still a good mate of his brother Nigel (he was also a goalkeeper) sad loss R.I.P. hope this works hear gowaz.
So sorry for not spelling it out for you! I was only comparing them to Millwall because of the "no one likes us but we don't care" attitude. I don't think it was like that when Alan Woodward was around
Scored one of the best hat-tricks I've ever seen in a 6-1 win for them at Ninian Park. He also nearly broke the bar with another thunderbolt. Completely ran the show that day. Fabulous player and a sad loss. RIP Alan Woodward
