sometime around 1980 I believe I saw Buddy Rich and his big band at Barnsley Civic Hall. Now for such a world famous artiste to come to Barnsley was a major coup and would be the equivalent of some superstar coming to Goldthorpe now. BUT.... I can't find any reference to it anywhere. I now imagine that I am making the whole thing up. I definitely went to see him at Sheffield Crucible later on...... but did he actually ever come to Barnsley. I've no evidence it ever happened ! For those who don't have a clue who Buddy Rich is then try youtube.... the greatest drummer the world has ever known.
Yes more likely the Fiesta or Wakefield seeing as they got all the big names at those places. I saw Roy Orbison at the Fiesta early 70s. Brilliant show but he never said a word. Just sang the big numbers. No chat required!
NO..... I've never been to either of those. This is now driving me crackers. My wife says I am useless and perhaps it's true but to not be sure about a major event like that is very disconcerting. It's like watching Barnsley beat Liverpool, Chelsea and then go to Wembley and years later you say... "did it actually happen, I can't really remember."
Or of course you could always "Ask Jeeves" like I just did and it comes up with the following comment from an Aussie in 1999: Name: ian Website: Referred by: Just Surfed On In From: australia Time: 1999-04-12 03:49:00 Comments: I first saw Buddy play at Barnsley Town Hall, Yorkshire, England. Buddy had been in the press expressing his distain for the group who were occupying the number one position in the pop charts at the time,'Blondie'. At the start of second set Buddy asked the audience if they had any requests. As quick as a flash some wag shouts out, "Heart of Glass!",the title of the sorry effort masquerading as music. The audience cracked up as Buddy proceeded to inform the guy where he could stick his 'heart of glass'. A trivial tale perhaps but there aren't enough comments this site that relate to the wit and repartee of one of the 20th century's true genius's. My Jack Russell could probably pull out a well worn bit of vinyl bearing the name Buddy Rich if I mentioned the words 'world's greatest drummer' but who knows who it was that uttered the words (and a very good motto for life I might add),"Life's too short to date ugly women"? You've been a fabulous audience, thankyou and goodnight.
