Anybody here been? Is it worth a visit? Trying to think of a new (European) city to visit at the start of next year.
I went in about 1990 and wasn't that impressed although you can do Milan and Turin in the same holiday. If you've never been to Venice go there instead. It's as great a place as I've ever visited. Or Florence. Or Rome. But not Naples.
I went skiing to Italy years ago, we were meant to land in Turin but the weather was too rough so we had to land in Milan. So I've been (by default) but know nowt about what it's like.
I'll be in Florence next weekend, lifetimes ambition to visit it. Hope it lives up to my expectations.
If you go in winter then wrap up. It gets very cold. I did Florence, Bologna and Venice in January 1990, few months before the Italy World Cup. I came back with the worst flu I've ever had. If you remember the lego-like mascot for Italia 90, I saw it over there and when I got home I had really deep weird dreams with that image flashing on and off. Flu or someone put bad acid in my pizzas.
been to Florence loads Whitey, it's great if your buying drinks and ice cream avoid central ones it will cost an arm an a leg, Sienna is worth a visit if your around Tuscany for a bit
We're on a cruise, mate. One of its stop offs is Livorno so we're going to go to Florence from there. We'll have about 10 hours there. The initial plan for us was to go on a 4 night break somewhere, and Rome, Florence and Barcelona were our preferred destinations. But we saw this cruise which would see us visit all three cities, plus Monaco, Corsica and Palma. So we've decided to do that. And if we enjoy these places, we can always go back for an extended break. We've booked an excursion for Rome though, the others we're winging it and doing the day at our own speed etc. But any tips/advice would be most welcome as I'm just being the simple tourist and heading for the obvious attractions etc.
Blimey you could do with 10 days ! . I would visit the piazza della signiori. Don't sit at the cafes there it is expensive. You can see the statues of Perseus and the rape of the Sabine women. The duomo ( cathedral ) is worth a visit. You can walk in passage ways between the outer and inner walls of the cupola (dome ) and see the frescos at close hand. The baptistery is also close by with its gold leaf decorated ceiling. The bell tower is worth the climb to the top is worth it for the view alone. The duomo etc all have admission charges however the queues are normally not to long. As for the uffizi gallery or the academia the queues can be for hours unless you book online in advance. Oh and the ponte vechio. The only bridge across the Arno that the Germans didn't destroy during the war.
May I ask which travel company you've booked with? Always fancied going on those kind of holidays/breaks but wouldn't have the first clue which is best etc.
Thomson. Here's a link: http://www.thomson.co.uk/cruise/itineraries/glitz-and-glamour-itinerary.html They do others of course, which you'll find on that site. The Island Escape that we're going on is on its farewell tour, being decommissioned in October, it's as old as me, literally. It's a relatively cheap holiday, in my humble opinion. But I'll let you know if it's any good when I return in mid June.
