Motoring groups warn of "teething problems" for drivers attempting to hire cars, as the new system comes into force.

As with most IT infrastructure projects this is a euphemism for 'it will be a complete dogs dinner for months'.

Haha I read that as 'Motoring groups warn of "teething problems" for drivers attempting to hire cars, as the new system comes into farce.'

Just to be clear to people who haven't heard of this - it's the paper part that goes with the photocard that is no longer needed - not the old paper only licence.

This is likely to be a very appropriate word.

"Drivers can generate a check code up to 72 hours before collecting the vehicle and if they want extra assurance they can also download or print out an electronic summary of their driving licence record."

    Free? I doubt it.

Its free at the moment - I just logged on to check how it all works :
    http://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

Of course it assumes that you always have planned ahead and generated the code before hand. Not sure what happens in a situation like my Mrs who was in France and had a car breakdown - The AA continental rescue worked a treat and she was given a hire car at the garage she was recovered to - no problem just show driving licence and counterpart

if that happened tomorrow she would be faffing about on a smart phone maybe without even a 3G signal trying to remember her national insurance number trying to generate the code. International data rates applying of course

Is 'gotten' a proper word? I thought it was a yank thing.

"I've gotten so fat eating so much fast food" - Definitely sounds like a Yank thing to me.

Just had to apply for a new driving licence as it's 10 years since my last one was issued. It arrived in the post this morning, paper counterpart and all. A leaflet came with it saying that from the 8th of June (today) I should rip up the paper counterpart as they are no longer valid. I had to pay £18 to change my photo from what was on my driving licence to what is on my passport, which is exactly the same photo, and to receive a paper counterpart the day they are no longer in use.

    Best £18 I've ever spent

It's alright for you youngsters, but what about us old 'uns? My first driving licence was hand written in Latin on a roll of parchment. It was all you could get in those days. I passed my driving test in a horse drawn chariot, with big swords stuck on the hub caps!

Parchment is still not as heavy as slate.

Correct. But you know how much those admin loving Romans liked their parchment work.

I've had my license since 1980 - never had one of those photographic jobbies. Am I OK to hire a car abroad? Going to USA later this year and will probably hire a car
