Knife crime is a massive problem in society. What the hell was a school kid doing with knife in school in the first place? We really do have to get very tough on knife crime, those who carry a knife and the reasons why these moronic wannabe gangsters who feel that they have to be carrying in the first place.

I did some work at the school last summer, and it came across as highly regimented, with the staff coming down on pupils like the proverbial if they breathed out of place. No talking in the corridors and that kind of thing. It is a very strange environment that doesn't feel like a school, I can't quite put my finger on what the atmosphere is, but certainly not one I'd like a child of mine to be in every day.

Whether the strictness was due to the bad publicity they'd have because of the fraud of the founder previously, I don't know. And whether the atmosphere I speak of did anything to lead to this tragedy, I don't know either. But in my experience, there is the potential for things to go very wrong with these 'free schools', some of which seem to be managed by those with spurious ideas on education, and it seems very difficult to bring them into accountability.

Hope the teacher makes a full recovery.

Agreed. You're caught with a knife and it should be instant prison. That threat will soon stop people carrying them.

They carry them to appear thought but I honestly can't think of anything that shows you're a coward more than carrying a knife

Well if that was directed at me, thank you, oh sage of reason, for completely misunderstanding the point and *******ising my words.

All my post was doing was giving my experiences of the school to give context, not excuses but perhaps some idea of cause and effect, in thinking about what chain of circumstances can lead to someone undertaking such a despicable act. If things like this are to be prevented, we have to explore the reasons they come to happen. And my post didn't even do that, but, as I said, just gave some context as to what the school is like.

Please don't be so blunt as to assume doing this is 'excusing' a vicious assault and possible attempted murder.

Our schools in my distant memory were garbage, no facilities, carp teachers (bar one), etc etc. Not once did i even contemplate taking a knife in to school and knifing a teacher i didn't like cos it was too strict etc.

it's proposterous to even think about it. the guilty should be found and banged away.....no excuse whatsoever. Just lucky this time the teacher was not killed unlike the teacher at the Leeds school.

sad day that is becoming far too common.

We are going to get to the point where school kids go through metal detectors like the ones at all the airports. Something has to be done quickly otherwise another teacher is likely to be killed.

I wouldn't advise calling someone holding a knife a coward unless you are some sort of ninja or have a gun . It was quite common when I was a kid in the 60 's early 70's for lads to have a throwing knife not in school obviously but I did see a few lads at Holgate with them

I always carried a knife as a child/teenager. Everywhere I went, including school, I had a knife in my pocket. Used it just about every day and would have felt lost without it. Never threatened anyone with it or got it out in a fight or used it for any sort of violence at all, it was just an extremely useful tool.

Couldn't afford one of those although desperately wanted one. Just a pen knife. Well, many pen knives, they had a habit of getting lost.
