I think some folk pretend to like things, to fit in, be 'cool'. I know a few lads who profess to loving Stone Roses but know only half their songs. They're young lads, it's cool to like them. Others are often snobbish about why bands/music they don't like can appeal to others. As per my original reply to the question. No bands are overrated. Different strokes etc. Conan for instance, knows most people think his musical taste is horrific. Hence threads like this where he can feel better about it by seeing big, mainstream bands/artists torn to bits. Me? I don't give a ****. Got some Roxette on at minute.
I just thought there were a lot of bands in that "scene" who were a lot better than Nirvana - Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Screaming Trees being the best. There have been some great bands/artists in addition to those - Queensryche, Nevermore and of course Jimi Hendrix - all from Seattle.
I know my taste is exquisite - and that's all that matters to me. Roxette though - they were never rated by anyone.
When was the last time you heard anyone - fan or music journo - raving about the quality of The Backstreet Boys music?
All opinions but I have never really rated the Beatles. The only track I did like was Revolution which was the B side of Hey Jude. To me nothing beats Pink Floyd.
Not the Backstreet Botpys but Girls Aloud were a fantastic pop band. Music snobs slagged them off but truly great pop.
I have. Fans and journalists. Have you heard of Nick Drake? Sold bugger all records but journos go mad about him - as do the relatively small number of people who bought his records. I heard one song and thought it was terrible. You seem to be interpreting the question as "which bands who have sold loads of records don't you like?"
That's a good example then. They sold a few records but aren't overrated because no one ever gave them any acclaim in the first place. I had you down as a music snob tbh Jim. Someone with eclectic tastes but still a snob. I mean that as a compliment btw.
Fans you say. Doing the rating. Therefore Coldplay aren't overrated, to their fans, get it? I'm not interpreting it in any way, it's simply different tastes. I'm sure there are journo's opinions you can find that are complimentary to most bands too.
